Largely enhanced mechanical performance of poly(butylene succinate) multiple system via shear stress-induced orientation of the hierarchical structure

Abstract: The simultaneous reinforcement and toughening of poly(butylene succinate) was achieved via an oriented hierarchical structure induced by oscillation shear stress and promoted by poly(l-lactide).

“…[16,17] Moreover, the appropriate orientation of phase field can enhance the fracture toughness without major compromise to stiffness and strength. [11,[18][19][20][21][22][23][24][25] Hence, the nacre with laminated structure is twice as hard and 1000 times as tough as its constituent phases, providing strength, hardness, and toughness. [10] Such investigations inspire us to design an oriented and gradient structure in the cocontinuous phase, which is highly expected to have excellent performance.…”

“…Apart from oriented phase morphologies, shear stress can also induce formation of oriented hierarchical structure including oriented crystallites and oriented chain segments. [18][19][20][21][22][23] The morphologies at a micrometer (or submicrometer) scale are revealed using FE-SEM combined with etching technique. As shown in Figure 5a, astonishingly well aligned lamellae of PBS are formed in skin layer, reflecting that the intense shear stress can induce chain configuration from the initial equilibrium random-coil state to oriented and aligned states and promote the formation of oriented lamellae.…”
