This study compared the diurnal and seasonal cycles of atmospheric and surface urban heat islands (UHIs) based on hourly air temperatures (Ta) collected at 65 out of 262 stations in Beijing and land surface temperature (Ts) derived from Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer in the years 2013–2014. We found that the nighttime atmospheric and surface UHIs referenced to rural cropland stations exhibited significant seasonal cycles, with the highest in winter. However, the seasonal variations in the nighttime UHIs referenced to mountainous forest stations were negligible, because mountainous forests have a higher nighttime Ts in winter and a lower nighttime Ta in summer than rural croplands. Daytime surface UHIs showed strong seasonal cycles, with the highest in summer. The daytime atmospheric UHIs exhibited a similar but less seasonal cycle under clear‐sky conditions, which was not apparent under cloudy‐sky conditions. Atmospheric UHIs in urban parks were higher in daytime. Nighttime atmospheric UHIs are influenced by energy stored in urban materials during daytime and released during nighttime. The stronger anthropogenic heat release in winter causes atmospheric UHIs to increase with time during winter nights, but decrease with time during summer nights. The percentage of impervious surfaces is responsible for 49%–54% of the nighttime atmospheric UHI variability and 31%–38% of the daytime surface UHI variability. However, the nighttime surface UHI was nearly uncorrelated with the percentage of impervious surfaces around the urban stations.

A full analysis of 3-month Standardized Precipitation-Evapotranspiration index (SPEI-3) changes and attribution analyses are of significance for deeply understanding dryness/wetness evolutions and thus formulating specific measures to sustain regional development. In this study, we analyze monthly and annual SPEI-3 changes over Southwest China (SWC; including Sichuan (SC), Chongqing (CQ), Guizhou (GZ), Yunnan (YN), and west Guangxi (wGX)) during 1961–2012, using the SPEI model and routine meteorological measurements at 269 weather sites. For SWC and each subregion (excluding wGX), annual SPEI-3 during 1961–2012 tends to decrease, and drying is at most of months in January and September–December, but wetting is in February–August (excluding March for wGX). Additionally, more than 50% of sites show declined and increased SPEI-3 in January, April, June, and August–December and the remaining months, respectively. Except for wGX with dominant of ET0, annual SPEI-3 changes in SWC and other four subregions have dominant of precipitation. Spatially, annual SPEI-3 changes at 59% of sites are because of precipitation, generally located in southeast SC, south YN, CQ, GZ, and south and northeast wGX. Nevertheless, dominants at regional and site scales vary among months, e.g., SWC, SC, CQ, and GZ, having dominant of precipitation (ET0) during September–December (most of months during January–August), YN always with dominant of precipitation, and wGX with dominant of precipitation (ET0) in February–April and July–December (January, May, and June). Importantly, this study provides a reference for quantitatively evaluating spatiotemporal dryness/wetness variations with climate change, especially for regions with significant drying/wetting.

Urban surface expansion affects land-atmosphere interactions as well as rainfall. Both the subregional areaaveraged daily (DRAIN) and the subregional cumulative volumetric (VRAIN) rainfall amounts are important in this context for hydrological applications and management. Conducted at the city (Beijing, Shanghai, and Guangzhou), city cluster (Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei (BTH), the Yangtze River Delta (YRD), and the Pearl River Delta (PRD)), and national levels in China, numerical experiments were performed in this study using a regional climate model. The analysis revealed that urban-related changes in rainfall variability were more distinct for stronger rainfall among rainfalls of various intensity levels whereas changes in rainfall intensity were more pronounced for weaker rainfall. Furthermore, urban-induced changes in heavy storm rain were more prominent among rainfalls of various intensity levels, for which changes in the variability in DRAIN and VRAIN were more distinct than changes in their intensities, and exhibited marked subregional characteristics. The risk of heavy storm rain increased because of strengthened urban-induced DRAIN and VRAIN variability over Beijing, and urban areas of the YRD and China. However, the risk of heavy storm rain decreased because of decreased DRAIN and VRAIN variability and the reduced intensity of DRAIN over urban areas of Shanghai, nonurban areas of BTH, and nonurban and the entire areas of Guangzhou, the YRD, and the PRD. The urban-induced drying tendency in the lower troposphere and wetting tendency in the low-middle troposphere, and enhanced vertical motions played an important role in determining the changes in DRAIN and VRAIN in case of storm rain and heavy storm rain.
