“…Numerous evidence and publications have recently pointed to rich spatial modulation across a wide range of visual thalamus and cortices (Hok et al 2018; Ji and Wilson 2007; Haggerty and Ji 2015; Saleem et al 2018; Fournier et al 2020; Campbell and Giocomo 2018; Flossmann and Rochefort 2021; Long et al 2021a; Zong et al 2022). A preliminary finding has suggested a compact spatial map that consists of place cells, gird cells, head-direction cells, and border cells exists in the rat V2 visual cortex (Long et al 2021a).…”

“…Vision plays an important role in spatial navigation, and various visual cues can be integrated with spatial cues to guide movement. In the literature, spatial tunings have been established in the dorsal lateral geniculate nucleus (dLGN), primary visual cortex (V1) and other visual cortical areas from head-fixed or freely-foraging animals during spatial navigation tasks (Fiser et al 2016; Hok et al 2018; Saleem et al 2018; Campbell and Giocomo 2018; Fournier et al 2020; Diamanti et al 2021; Flossmann and Rochefort 2021; Zong et al 2022). Vision and movement jointly contribute to hippocampal place codes (Chen et al 2013); simultaneous recordings of rodent V1 and hippocampal CA1 have also shown coherent coding of spatial signals (Ji and Wilson 2007; Haggerty and Ji 2015; Fournier et al 2020).…”

“…Although it is still a challenge, combining the ecologically relevant behavioral research with advanced methods of brain imaging, measuring neuronal activity, and manipulation of specific circuits has become more and more feasible over the last years. Even though such methodologies are not without their challenges, we are at the point when newly developing technologies allow wireless recording/manipulating many neurons at a time in group-housed animals ( Anpilov et al., 2020 ; Cai et al., 2022 ; Caras and Sanes, 2017 ; Inagaki et al., 2019 ; Li et al., 2022 ; Lu et al., 2018 ; Mayer et al., 2019 ; Montgomery et al., 2015 ; Murphy et al., 2016 ; Pinnell et al., 2015 ; Yang et al., 2021 ; Zong et al., 2022 ). Broader implementation of those methodologies increases our chances of developing experiments, whose results will stand over time and thus enable us to break the impasse in proposing new, effective therapeutic strategies.…”

“…Chen et al (1994) found HD cells in a higher visual cortical area, Oc2M 30 . HD cells in the visual cortex have also recently been recorded using a head-mounted two-photon calcium imaging microscope 62 . Notably, while the observed RVL values in the present study were lower than reported in classic HD brain regions, they were on par with those from the two-photon visual cortex data 62 .…”
