Large‐scale streaming of flat galaxies

Abstract: We consider a sample of thin edge-on galaxies from new a Flat Galaxy Catalogue, FGC (Karachentsev et al. 1993) covering the whole sky. The galaxies have been selected into the Catalogue by their apparent axis ratio a/b 2 7 and angular diameter a > 0.6 arcmin. Among 4455 such galaxies 893 have estimates both radial velocity and inner motion amplitude, however most part of them (542) are concentrated in the Arecibo zone. This sample is characterized by the medians: Uh = +5300 km s-' , W 5 0 = 285 km s -' and T y… Show more

“…Our results re-enforce the conclusions of Karachentsev and collaborators (Karachentsev et al 1993(Karachentsev et al , 1999) that simple disk galaxies are relatively common, especially among intermediate-mass starforming galaxies (Matthews & Gallagher 1997). Galaxy formation models must be able to produce such high angular momentum systems with reasonable frequencies.…”

“…7: RFGC objects clearly exceed our chosen limits for simple disk galaxies in the case of both discriminators, the CI (upper inset) and the ε (bottom inset). That means that Karachentsev et al (1993) and Karachentsev et al (1999) did not only select simple disk systems, but also included some mixed-morphology galaxies, whose classification we can now correct thanks to the CCD data 3 .…”

“…Major Tully-Fisher distances catalogs are provided, including the Nearby Galaxies Catalog (NGC, Tully 1988, n=2371), the Mark III Catalog of Galaxy Peculiar Velocities (Mk III, Willick et al 1997, the Revised Flat Galaxies Catalog (RFGC, see Karachentsev et al 2000, n=1327, and Parnovsky & Parnowski (2010, n=1623), the Two-Micron All-Sky Survey (2MASS) Flat Galaxy Catalog (2MFGC, Karachentsev et al 2006Karachentsev et al , 2011, the Kinematics of the Local universe survey (KLUN, Theureau et al 2007, n=4149), and the Spiral Field I-band Plus survey (SFI++, Springob et al 2009, and references therein, n=4857). Additional Tully-Fisher distances among the many thousands in the EDD mentioned earlier but not published in other references are also included (EDD, Tully et al 2009Tully et al , 2013.…”
