Amphiphiles composed of two different natural renewable raw materials, amino acid and carbohydrate (chitin), were synthesized, and their colloidal properties were studied. N-Higher acylated glutamic and aspartic acid were used as amino acid raw materials. Chitin monomer (N-acetyl glucosamine) and dimer (N,N′-diacetylchitobiose) were employed as the carbohydrate hydrophilic moiety in the amphiphiles. These surfactants showed a surface tension in the range of 30-36 mN/m at their critical micelle concentration. In the study of colloidal properties, such as surface tension, emulsification, and foaming, the surfactants containing the monosaccharide hydrophilic group showed much better results than those with disaccharide. Biodegradation measurements showed that the tested surfactants are biodegraded by environmental microorganisms to 57-73% of the initial levels in 14 d. Their biodegradation extent depended on neither the saccharide structure nor the kind of amino acid.

The aim of the research was to know the capability of actinomycetes isolate from Bangka Belitung, which stored at Microbiology-LIPI Culture Collection, in producing chitinase enzyme. This isolate which could produce chitinolitic enzyme, signed by clear zone at medium contain 1% chitine. The chitinase activity of the isolate which incubated for 1-7 days in the room temperature was analyzed by spectrophotometer in λ 584 nm. The result of this experiment was highest chitinase activities with incubated for 3 days, were 1.66 . 10-2 U/ml. Maximum chitinase activities was found at 1% starch soluble substrate 2.83 . 10-2, pH 8.0 and at 50°C condition were 9.3 . 10-2 and 12.98 .10-2 U/ml respectively.Key words : chitinase, clear zone, spectrophotometer

Chitin, its deacetylated form, chitosan and chitinolytic enzymes viz. endo-chitinase, N-acetylglucosaminidase, chitosanase, chitin deacetylase (CDA) are gaining importance for their biotechnological applications. Presently, chitin degrading enzymes constitute high-cost low-volume products in human health care and associated research. Indeed chitinases and CDA-chitosanase complex possesss tremendous potential in agriculture to control plant pathogenic fungi and insects. The success in exploring chitinases especially for agriculture, i.e. as a high-volume low-cost product, depends on the availability of highly active preparations with a reasonable cost. Therefore, a reconsideration in terms of understanding the roles of chitinolytic enzymes in applications, e.g. host-pathogen interaction for biocontrol, different mechanisms of chitin degradation, and identification of new enzymes with varying specificities, may make them more useful in a variety of commercial processes in the near future. The possible issues and challenges encountered in the translation of proof of concept into a commercial product will be appraised in this review.
