Large-Scale Preparation, Chemical Exfoliation, and Structural Modification of Layered Zinc Hydroxide Nanocones: Transformation into Zinc Oxide Nanocones for Enhanced Photocatalytic Properties

Abstract: A convenient and effective water-bath method is developed for the preparation of layered zinc hydroxide nanocones (NCs) intercalated with dodecyl sulfate (C 12 H 25 OSO 3 − , DS − ) anions in large quantities. Furthermore, the morphology, size, and crystal structure of products could also be readily tuned by adjusting the experimental parameters. In particular, unilamellar zinc hydroxide nanosheets with a thickness of approximately 0.9 nm could be achieved by exfoliating the layered zinc hydroxide NCs in the f… Show more

“… 27 , 34 Assuming that the only other product is excess zinc carboxylate, the LZH-Ole synthesis yields ∼63 mol% Zn in the form of LZH (see ESI, † page 16). Specific yields are scarce in the literature, presumably due to the difficulty of identifying byproducts, but the value compares reasonably to ∼90 mol% Zn and 60–89 mol% Zn reported for LZH–dodecyl sulphate 62 and LZH–benzoate, 63 , 64 respectively.…”

“…Absorption bands less than 719 cm À 1 which are 696 cm À 1 , 584 cm À 1 , and 455 cm À 1 , can be attributed to different ZnÀ O stretching and Zn-OH bending vibrational modes. [20] Considering the intercalation of dodecyl sulfate anion can observe typical bands of this surfactant salt in both LHS-NC and LHS-CO products. Bands in the region of 2912 and 2858 cm À 1 can be attributed to asymmetric and symmetric CH 2 stretching vibration of dodecyl sulfate chain.…”

“…In the range of 1238-821 cm À 1 is possible to observe bands relative to different vibrational and stretching modes of sulfate group. [20] The scanning electron microscopy (SEM) image of the zinc layered hydroxide salts, LHS-NC and LHS-CO are shown in Figure 5. The formation of uniform conical objects is observed for LHS-NC (Figure 5b).…”

“…[19][20][21] Therefore, many nano/micro structures of these semiconductors have been reported and they also exhibit good performance in the photocatalytic application eld. 15,22,23 In recent years, with a wide band gap, non-toxic nature, excellent photosensitivity property, and large exciton binding energy, ZnO is considered as a good photocatalyst, which may be a reliable candidate for solving energy problems. 22,24 However, the photogenerated electrons and holes combine readily during the photocatalytic process due to the strong exciton binding.…”
