Cerambyx welensii Küster (Coleoptera: Cerambycidae) is a wood‐borer responsible for the decline of Mediterranean oaks in open woodlands. To establish that contact pheromones are involved in mate recognition of C. welensii, we extracted the cuticular hydrocarbons by solid phase microextraction at pre‐reproductive, beginning and ending of the reproductive period, and by solvent extraction of prothorax and elytra. The extracts were analysed by GC–MS under electron impact and chemical ionization conditions. Cuticular hydrocarbon profiles varied according to the reproductive period, although differences between sexes were not significant. Two compounds, 11/13‐methylheptacosane and 11‐methylnonacosane were more abundant in females at the beginning and ending of the reproductive periods. Compound 11/13‐methylheptacosane was also more representative in female prothorax than in males, and 2‐methyloctacosane was richer in male elytra than in females. We also studied the role of cuticular hydrocarbons in mate recognition in arena bioassays. Treatment of solvent‐washed dead females and glass dummies with one female equivalent (FE) of cuticular extract elicited mating responses in males, especially at the beginning of the reproductive period, with copulation attempts reaching 61.9% on solvent‐washed dead females and 23.8% on dummies. The successive treatment with synthetic compounds approaching a male cuticular profile inhibited male response. Our results confirm that contact pheromones mediate mate recognition in C. welensii. Knowledge of the precise role played by the major compounds 11/13‐methylheptacosane and 11‐methylnonacosane and other minor compounds representative in female prothorax may contribute to the development of novel management strategies against C. welensii.

The longhorn beetle, Cerambyx welensii (Küster) (Coleoptera: Cerambycidae), is considered a critical factor in oak decline in southwestern Iberia, but populations vary over space and time, depending on several ecological factors. Adults feed on ripe fruits and tree exudates, and evidence suggests that feeding could impact fitness in hot, dry summers, especially under climate change. In the present study, we assessed the impact of adult feeding (sugar-fed, water-fed, or unfed) and remating (monandrous versus polyandrous) on female reproductive output. Lifetime fecundity increased with female size in most feeding–remating combinations. Sugar-fed females achieved the highest longevity and fecundity, unfed females the lowest, and water-fed females had intermediate values. The daily fecundity pattern was strongly dependent on female feeding. Longevity and fecundity of once-mated and remated females were similar in both unfed and water-fed groups; however, in sugar-fed females, remating enhanced fecundity and shortened life span. Preoviposition, oviposition, and postoviposition periods were distinctly affected by both diet and remating. Results show that females require sugar to maximise reproductive output and that a water supply may partially mitigate the fitness decline of unfed females. We conclude that female feeding must be considered to explain C. welensii spatio-temporal occupancy–abundance patterns in oak woodlands.

Longhorn beetles (Cerambycidae) are a very diverse group whose species vary greatly in morphology and behaviour, particularly in diel activity. The type genus Cerambyx includes two large oak‐ling sympatric species (Cerambyx cerdo and Cerambyx welensii) that exhibit a crepuscular/nocturnal (dim‐light) lifestyle, but their actual diel activity remains largely unclear. We used phototraps in the wild to assess if diel activity depended on either species, sex or annual meteorology. Phototraps were highly effective, and the imaged activities were representative of beetles' life, including interactions with some vertebrate species. Both longhorns exhibited roughly similar crepuscular/nocturnal behaviour, with daytime activity being usually residual or erratic. Diel activity increased sharply just before dusk, peaked between dusk and early dark night (23:00–2:00 h), and then dropped progressively until disappearing at dawn. Diel activity was sexually dimorphic in C. welensii, as in some years females tended to be active earlier than males. Distinctly, in 2022, the warmest and driest year recorded in the study area, diel activity curves were flatter and wider, with C. cerdo activity increasing in the late afternoon (19:00–21:30 h) and C. welensii in the second half of the night (3:00–6:00 h). Furthermore, both species boosted daytime activity (diurnality) by more than three times, and diurnality also increased over the season that year. We finally hypothesise that, under the current climate change scenario, extreme droughts impact diel activity in these species, particularly boosting diurnality, in an attempt to locate water/food sources to counteract body dehydration.
