Large scale experimental effects of three levels of sheep densities on an alpine ecosystem

Abstract: PlantÁherbivore dynamics is a major topic in ecological research, but empirical knowledge on the ecological effects of different densities of large grazers from fully replicated experiments is rare. Previous studies have focused on grazing vs no grazing, and our understanding of the extent to which different levels of grazing alter vegetation composition, and how quickly such effects can be measured, is therefore limited. We performed a fully replicated, short-term (four-year) experiment using large enclosures… Show more

“…The data from Syverhuset [37] also show an increase of Solidago virgaurea in most sectors at Vesle Armodshøkollen. Austrheim et al [68] found this to be negatively affected by high densities of sheep, giving additional indications on low grazing pressure.…”

“…Dwarf shrub dominated vegetation on tundra heaths in areas with light grazing pressure from reindeer will often rapidly change into grasslands when the grazing pressure increased [66]. The cover of Betula nana has been shown to increase under moderate grazing of sheep but decrease under a high grazing pressure [68].…”

“…The mean annual precipitation (normal period 1961-90;Førland 1993) is estimated to be about 1000 mm (Evju 2009 Twenty permanent plots for vegetation monitoring (0.5 9 0.5 m 2 each) were distributed in each subenclosure at the start of the experiment in 2001 following a random stratified design (see Austrheim et al (2008) for details; Fig. 1).…”

“…Pasture and cutting also influences the structure of the flora. Low density of sheep has no effect on vegetation (Kausrud et al, 2006;Mayer and Huovinen, 2007;Austrheim et al, 2008) but it can affect vegetation when long-term (Mayer et al, 2009).…”
