Large Photovoltaic Power Plants Integration: A Review of Challenges and Solutions

Abstract: Renewable energy systems (RESs), such as photovoltaic (PV) systems, are providing increasingly larger shares of power generation. PV systems are the fastest growing generation technology today with almost ~30% increase since 2015 reaching 509.3 GWp worldwide capacity by the end of 2018 and predicted to reach 1000 GWp by 2022. Due to the fluctuating and intermittent nature of PV systems, their large-scale integration into the grid poses momentous challenges. This paper provides a review of the technical challen… Show more

“…Other authors [33,34] make a radiography of the development of the RESs in the EU member states and highlight the disparities between the Nordic and the southern countries, regarding the degree of the renewable energy use. A benchmarking analysis of the disparities between the EU and non-EU countries regarding renewable energy [35] shows statistically significant differences between the two categories.…”

“…The fast development of the exploitation of solar and wind energy on large scales through the use of photovoltaic (PV) panels [1] has led to the diffusion of multimegawatt plants with very large structures often installed in open fields [2]. This fact has posed the problem of the correct estimation of wind loads [3][4][5] to optimally develop the structural design.…”
