Large neutrino mixing and normal mass hierarchy: A discrete understanding

Abstract: We discuss the possibility of flavor symmetries to explain the pattern of charged lepton and neutrino masses and mixing angles. We emphasize what are the obstacles for the generation of an almost maximal atmospheric mixing and what are the minimal ingredients to obtain it. A model based on the discrete symmetry S3 is constructed, which leads to the dominant µτ -block in the neutrino mass matrix, thus predicting normal hierarchy. This symmetry makes it possible to reproduce current data and predicts 0.01 θ13 0.… Show more

“…As we will see in detail, the space of Higgs-boson doublets does, in terms of bilinears, not correspond to the forward light cone space, as in case of the THDM [4], but to a certain subspace; see [5,6,15]. Driven mainly by the quark-and neutrino mixing data, several 3HDM's have been proposed; see for instance [16][17][18][19] In an analogous way to the study of the THDM in [4] we will discuss in the following, in sections 2 to 7, stability, electroweak symmetry breaking, and the stationarity points of the potential for any 3HDM. In section 7 we discuss the potential after symmetry breaking, section 8 presents our conclusion.…”

“…see ref. [17]) also. It would therefore seem that considering µ ↔ τ symmetry for leptons, despite its strong breaking in the charged lepton sector is quite a meaningful and useful way to obtain information about physics beyond the standard model from neutrinos.…”
