Common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) is an important legume crop worldwide and is a major nutrient source in the tropics. Common bean reproductive development is strongly affected by heat stress, particularly overnight temperatures above 20°C. The desert Tepary bean (Phaseolus acutifolius A. Gray) offers a promising source of adaptative genes due to its natural acclimation to arid conditions. Hybridization between both species is challenging, requiring in vitro embryo rescue and multiple backcrossing cycles to restore fertility. This labor-intensive process constrains developing mapping populations necessary for studying heat tolerance. Here we show the development of an interspecific mapping population using a novel technique based on a bridging genotype derived from P. vulgaris, P. Acutifolius and P. parvifolius named VAP1 and is compatible with both common and tepary bean. The population was based on two wild P. acutifolius accessions, repeatedly crossed with Mesoamerican elite common bush bean breeding lines. The population was genotyped through genotyping-by-sequencing and evaluated for heat tolerance by genome-wide association studies. We found that the population harbored 59.8% introgressions from wild tepary, but also genetic regions from Phaseolus parvifolius, a relative represented in some early bridging crosses. We found 27 significative quantitative trait loci, nine located inside tepary introgressed segments exhibiting allelic effects that reduced seed weight, and increased the number of empty pods, seeds per pod, stem production and yield under high temperature conditions. Our results demonstrate that the bridging genotype VAP1 can intercross common bean with tepary bean and positively influence the physiology of derived interspecific lines, which displayed useful variance for heat tolerance.

Tepary bean (Phaseolus acutifolius A. Gray) cultivation is not expansive in Southern Africa due to the unavailability of high-yielding and locally adapted varieties. To deliver well-adapted and new-generation tepary beans in Africa, pre-breeding and breeding of drought tolerant and high-yielding varieties is a critical need. Therefore, the objective of this study was to determine the combining ability effects and genetic components for seed yield and yield-related traits in selected tepary bean genotypes under non-stressed (NS) and drought-stressed (DS) conditions. Seven parents and 21 F2 progenies derived from a half-diallel design were evaluated at two sites in Malawi under NS and DS conditions using a 4 × 7 lattice design with three replications. The genotype × location interaction effect was significant (p < 0.05) for days to 50% flowering (DTF), number of pods per plant (NPP), and seed yield (SY) traits under both NS and DS conditions, implying a differential performance of genotypes across the two locations. The specific combining ability (SCA) × Location interaction effect was significant (p < 0.05) for DTF, NPP, and SY under both water regimes, implying the genetic effects of crosses were affected by test locations. General combining ability (GCA) and SCA mean squares were significant for number of seeds per pod (NSP) and SY under DS condition, indicating additive and non-additive gene effects controlled these traits. Baker’s ratio (BR) > 0.50 for NPP and NSP under DS condition, suggested the preponderance of additive gene effects. The narrow-sense heritability estimates of > 0.60 for NSP under DS condition suggested relatively better trait transmissibility from parents to offspring. G40145, G40148, and G40150 were good general combiners for NPP and SY under both NS and DS conditions. F2 families Zimbabwe landrace x G40138, Zimbabwe landrace × G40150, G40059 × G40145, G40059 × G40148, G40138 × G40150, and G40145 × G40150 were best-specific combiners with enhanced SY of 1.67 tons/ha under DS condition. The selected parents are valuable genetic resources for breeding programs to enhance the NPP and SY. High-performing early-generation families are recommended for genetic advancement and selection across representative growing environments for variety release and commercialization.

Abiotic constraints, such as drought and heat driven by climate change, negatively impact the production of the common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.), an essential grain legume worldwide. The ability to tolerate drought and heat stress in common bean can be improved by introducing genetic variation from related species, such as tepary bean (Phaseolus acutifolius A. Gray), which has recently gained attention because of its adaptation to drought and heat stresses and potential use as a genetic resource and alternative crop. To better understand the phenotypic response of tepary bean to drought and heat stress in multiple environments and trials and to select highly adapted tepary beans, we conducted two field experiments. In Experiment 1, we compared the adaptation to drought stress of tepary bean (n = 10), common bean (n = 10), and Lima bean (Phaseolus lunatus L.; n = 9) by assessing the reduction in grain yield under terminal drought compared to well‐irrigated conditions in two California locations with arid summer conditions. Of the three species, tepary bean showed the statistically strongest adaptation to terminal drought, followed by Lima bean and common bean. In Experiment 2, we evaluated a set of 22 tepary beans from contrasting origins for drought and heat stresses across multi‐environment trials (METs) in California, Nebraska, and Colombia, with common bean as a control. We found a considerable variation in the tepary bean phenotypic response to these MET conditions, as a result of a strong genotype × environment interaction. Also, we identified tepary bean accessions adapted to drought, heat, and well‐irrigated conditions across multiple climate zones. Understanding the performance of tepary bean across multiple environments and identifying tepary beans with broad and target‐specific adaptation will maximize the potential use of the species.
