“…The carbon stable isotopic compositions of CH 4 and CO 2 were measured with an IRMS and are reported as conventional δ 13 C CH 4 and δ 13 C CO 2 values in ‰ along the carbon isotopic scale anchored to Vienna Pee Dee Belemnite (VPDB). CH 4 samples were measured in continuous-flow mode using CH 4 preconcentration and cryofocusing (Miller et al, 2002) and a gas chromatography-oxidation/pyrolysis-IRMS (GC-ox/pyr-IRMS) interface as briefly described by Cadieux et al, (2016). A variable sample extraction time was used to isolate approximately 0.4 μmol of CH 4 from each sample prior to introduction to the GC-ox/pyr-IRMS.…”

“…Methanogenesis in freshwaters mainly occurs in the sediment, where anoxic conditions prevail (Bastviken, ). Besides production by methanogenesis, CH 4 in freshwater systems is subject to microbial aerobic or anaerobic methane oxidation, although the latter appears less important in freshwaters (Bastviken, ; Cadieux et al, ; Oswald et al, ). Sawakuchi et al (), for example, found that methane oxidation reduced the diffusive CH 4 flux by approximately 28–96% in the Amazon River mainstream and in its five largest tributaries.…”

“…As a result of amplified warming in the Arctic over the past 20 years (IPCC, 2013), Greenland has experienced significant mass loss of the Greenland Ice Sheet (GIS; Nghiem et al, 2012;van As et al, 2012;Hall et al, 2013;Hanna et al, 2013Hanna et al, , 2014. Despite the abundance of lakes on the ice-free margin of Greenland and intense changes to the landscape as the result of warming, there are only a few published studies that have measured CH 4 in Greenlandic lakes (Walter Anthony et al, 2012;Webster et al, 2015;Cadieux et al, 2016;Goldman et al, 2016).…”
