Large eddy simulation of a homogeneously charged turbulent jet ignition system

Abstract: Transient jet ignition of a homogeneous methane air mixture in a turbulent jet ignition system is studied computationally using a large eddy simulation turbulence model. The jet discharges from a prechamber into a main combustion chamber via one or more orifice(s) and provides a distributed ignition source in turbulent jet ignition. The effect of orifice size and stoichiometry is studied numerically using the Converge computational fluid dynamics code. A reduced kinetic mechanism is used for combustion along w… Show more

“…Nowadays, prechamber gas engine technology is commercially established in larger stationary engines where engines in the 10-MW class with two-stage turbocharging technology achieve peak brake thermal efficiencies of around 50%. 25,26 Prechamber systems have also found their way to high-performance race engines 27,28 and recently gained increasing interest in the research and technology community in terms of numerical modeling in different fidelity levels, 2935 in fundamental experiments 3639 or in the implementation to engines. 23,27,40,41…”

“…[5][6][7][8][9][10][11][12]) and some LES studies start to appear (e.g. [13][14][15][16]). These studies have ranged from fundamental investigations of turbulent jet ignition under atmospheric (or slightly elevated pressure) conditions in constant volume chambers, to optical experiments in engine or engine-like setups.…”
