Large cell anaplastic lymphoma associated with breast implant: a rare case report presentation and discussion of possible management

Abstract: Anaplastic large cell lymphomas (ALCL) are a rare type of primary breast lymphoma. The association between breast implants and ALCL was first described in 1997. Breast implant associated (BIA)-ALCL arises from the inflammatory T cells surrounding the fibrous capsule, and most tumors are in situ. Here we present the case of a 60-year-old woman with ALCL following bilateral silicone breast prosthesis implantation for aesthetic reason. The patient presented at our observation 7 years following the first surgery re… Show more

“…However, surgical methods using implants leave scars and are associated with the risk of bleeding, nerve damage, and capsular contracture. In addition, cancer may develop in some rare cases 1,2 . An alternative breast augmentation method that uses fat grafting might lead to complications, such as fat necrosis, calcification, and formation of encapsulated fatty masses (cystic lesions), thus making it a less desirable technique 3,4 .…”

“…For stage IIA-IV disease, systemic treatments are required including radiotherapy, chemotherapy and the administration of immunotherapeutic agents such as BV. For patients with invasion beyond the fibrous capsule (stage IIA), successful treatment outcomes have been achieved with full capsulectomy in combination with radiotherapy 64 or chemotherapy and radiotherapy 65 , 66 , 67 . The successful use of BV has been reported when a patient progressed through chemotherapy 65 and prior to capsulectomy, in order to avoid more complicated and risky surgery involving the sub-pectoral muscles and ribs.…”

“…However, in the early stages of the disease, lymphoma can be difficult to identify from breast cancer. Anaplastic Large Cell Lymphomas (ALCL) are a kind of primary breast lymphoma that is extremely rare [13]. The cancer cells in the lungs are designated as breast cancer cells, as shown in Figure 2.…”
