Large area TES spiderweb bolometer for multi-mode cavity microwave detect

Abstract: Large area spiderweb bolometers of 8 mm diameter and a mesh size of 250 μm are fabricated in order to couple with approximately the first 20 modes of a multimode EM cavity at about 140 GHz. The sensor is a Ti/Au/Ti 3 layer TES with Tc tuned in the 330-380 mK and 2 mK transition width. We describe the detector design and the fabrication process, early TES electro-thermal measurements. We also report optical coupling measurement and show the multimode coupling.

“…The Short Wavelength Instrument for the Polarization Explorer (SWIPE) is a coarse-resolution balloon-borne CMB polarimeter, part of the Large Scale Polarization Explorer (LSPE) [42] mission, to be flown during the Arctic night. The instrument uses multi-moded TES bolometers [43,44], sensitive to a total of 8800 radiation modes in the 150, 220, 240 GHz bands, and a cryogenic rotating HWP to modulate CMB polarization [45] and mitigate systematic effects. Its flight is planned for the 2020/2021 season.…”

“…Finally we discuss the results of the optimization for the specific case of LSPE-SWIPE, for each band of the instrument, constraining the detector parameters as well as the transition temperature of the film T C and its normal resistance R N . We show that, with these choices, we are able to push the TES technology to its best performance [5].…”

“…The demanding need of detecting these tiny polarized signals, i.e., of the order of fractions of lK, with photonnoise limited detectors drives the development of large focal plane arrays able to accommodate thousands of single-mode detectors, 6 or alternatively hundreds of multi-moded detectors. 8,9 The multi-mode solution is appealing when high angular resolution is not the driver of the measurement, as in the case of measurements of B-modes in the CMB polarization. In this case, a moderate-sized array of multi-moded detectors can collect the same number of modes as a much larger array of single-mode detectors.…”

“…The total active area of the bolometers on the chip is about 300 lm 2 , which is extremely small compared to other recently described multimode detectors. 9 This can help to decrease the influence of Cosmic Ray hits (spikes) on the measured signal. The outer diameter of the FSS ring shown in Fig.…”
