Large Area, Molecularly Smooth (0.2 nm rms) Gold Films for Surface Forces and Other Studies

Abstract: Using large-area (cm2) single-crystal mica sheets as the templating substrate, we have created correspondingly large template-stripped (TS) gold films (thickness 82 +/- 2 nm) that appear smooth to within 0.2 nm rms roughness over their entire area. These gold films, created without the use of any releasing solvent, are characterized using AFM, X-ray diffraction, multiple beam interferometric fringes of equal chromatic order (FECO), and contact angle measurements. Being molecularly smooth over large areas and (… Show more

“…However, once the film is exposed to the atmosphere, it rapidly becomes less hydrophilic. 35,36 We were able to confirm that the contact angle was 29°after it was taken out of the deposition chamber. However, the contact angle began to change rapidly; it reached 70°and saturated at that angle after 30 min.…”

“…Although the change of the surface state is unavoidable, the contact angle on a gold surface exposed for a sufficiently long time seems to be fairly reproducible in comparison to the previous results presented by the other groups. 21,36,37 The roughness of the electrode surface is characterized by the variables in Eqs. ͑6͒ and ͑7͒.…”

“…Self-assembled CH 3 and OH monolayers were prepared on molecularly smooth gold surfaces using a previously described technique (17,47). First, a 45-nm layer of gold was deposited onto a freshly cleaved mica surface using electron beam deposition.…”
