“…This important demonstration stimulated intensive studies by other researchers 85,93 , and versatile 3D nanostructures were manufactured ( Fig. 5f-k) 80,82,94 , among which the first photonic application was demonstrated by Cui et al in 2015 through folding of a vertical split-ring resonator (SRR) array on a metallic hole array 80 . However, most of these nanostructures were fabricated by local irradiation of specific areas, which induced zero curvature except at the folding regions, 55 .…”

“…The lateral dimensions of their filament structures, however, were quite small, about 25 µm × 3 mm. The production technologies for pure metal freestanding nanomembranes evolved over years and Jia et al reported in 2019 a routine production of large-area (up to 75 cm 2 ) freestanding gold nanomembranes with arrays of nanoholes and with thickness values as low as 50 nm [61].…”

“…This process has been used for the fabrication of many nanosystems, from simple folded beam structures, [ 21–23 ] carbon nanotubes, [ 24 ] and semiconductor nanowires [ 25 ] to origami cubes, [ 26,27 ] helix, [ 20 ] metamaterials, [ 28–30 ] and kirigami devices. [ 31–33 ] To the best of our knowledge, Mao et al. have firstly proposed actuated structures fabricated by FIB‐SID and consist of folding bilayer Si3N4/Au composite, which can be electrothermally activated in a binary status (ON‐OFF) in order to control the resonance absorption of a tunable metasurface.…”
