Large Area 2D and 3D Colloidal Photonic Crystals Fabricated by a Roll-to-Roll Langmuir–Blodgett Method

Abstract: We present our results on the fabrication of large area colloidal photonic crystals on flexible poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) film using a roll-to-roll Langmuir-Blodgett technique. Two-dimensional (2D) and three-dimensional (3D) colloidal photonic crystals from silica nanospheres (250 and 550 nm diameter) with a total area of up to 340 cm(2) have been fabricated in a continuous manner compatible with high volume manufacturing. In addition, the antireflective properties and structural integrity of the film… Show more

“…Several self-assembly techniques have been proposed for large-area photonic crystals using spin coating43, doctor blade coating44, spray coating45, and a roll-to-roll Langmuir-Blodgett (LB)46 methods. However, it is still difficult to fabricate highly scalable, defect-free colloidal crystals of non-crosslinked spheres.…”

“…[1] The current commercial material of choice for their fabrication is indium tin oxide (ITO), which has a high electrical conductivity and is optically transparent due to its large bandgap of ≈3.6 eV. [16,17] Especially promising is the potential use of a wider range of substrates, due to a reduced (or in-)dependence of the structure of the interfacial layer on substrate properties (chemical homogeneity, flatness, wettability). “…[2] However, the scarcity of indium and brittleness of the ceramic ITO, in increasing the scalability of Langmuir-Blodgett methods to feasible production levels is understandably beginning to emerge. [16,17] Especially promising is the potential use of a wider range of substrates, due to a reduced (or in-)dependence of the structure of the interfacial layer on substrate properties (chemical homogeneity, flatness, wettability). [18] However, one significant weakness of liquid-based film fabrication is still the lack of in situ characterization.…”

“…The coverage of the nanocrystals reached 77%, 80%, and 91% of the substrates as determined from the SEM images. Note that large‐scale manufacturing of these plasmonic substrates can possibly be achieved using roll‐to‐roll Langmuir–Blodgett technique that allows to transfer large‐area of self‐assembled structures in a continuous manner …”

“…Note that large-scale manufacturing of these plasmonic substrates can possibly be achieved using roll-to-roll Langmuir-Blodgett technique that allows to transfer large-area of self-assembled structures in a continuous manner. [46] We next tested fluorescence enhancement by these plasmonic substrates for three dyes (BDP-FL, Cy5, and IR-800CW) conjugated to bovine serum albumin (BSA) (Figure 2a), which has a size impermeable to the crosslinked PDA layer. Conjugation to BSA also reduces fluorescence quenching originated from either aggregation of the fluorophores or direct contact with PDA.…”
