Large and medium-sized mammals of Nova Baden State Park, Minas Gerais, Brazil

Abstract: Abstract. Nova Baden State Park (NBSP) is located in theBrazilian Atlantic Forest which is a biodiversity hotspot and priority for conservation. Our aim is to provide a list of large and medium-sized mammal species recorded in NBSP. We made a camera trap survey and opportunistic observations from December 2014 to September 2015, and searched the grey literature. We recorded 12 large and medium-sized mammals in our survey and 11 more species listed in grey literature. The 23 species registered for NBSP belong t… Show more

“…Also, the absence of dog pups in the park area indicated that dogs were probably derived from regions around the park, suggesting a steady flow of these animals between the park and urban areas. These results, together with other fundamental studies (Galetti and Sazima, 2006;Srbek-Araujo and Chiarello, 2008;Lacerda et al, 2009;Torres and Prado, 2010;Curi et al, 2016;Lessa et al, 2016;Paschoal et al, 2016;Fernandez et al, 2017;Rosa and Souza, 2017;Vieira et al, 2017;Paschoal et al, 2018), clearly confirm that Brazilian forest areas (mainly those close to urban centers) are strongly influenced by the activity of domestic/free-ranging dogs.…”

“…Despite differences in the sample size and survey methods between distinct sites, the ARIE-FC harbors a richness of medium-sized and large mammals either greater than or similar to other studies in protected and unprotected fragments smaller than 500 ha of seasonal semideciduous forest in southeastern Brazil (e.g., Modesto et al 2008;Prado et al 2008;Pires and Cademartori 2012;Pereira et al 2013;Magioli et al 2014;Rosa and Souza 2017;Costa et al 2019). Compared to larger remnants (>500 ha), the ARIE-FC had more species than some sites in the Atlantic Forest, including large protected areas (e.g., Pessôa et al 2009;Albuquerque et al 2013;Nunes et al 2013;Aximoff et al 2015).…”
