Coffee consumption is a daily habit for the majority of people worldwide, resulting in consistently large amounts of residue. Spent coffee ground (SCG) is the residue obtained during the brewing process. It represents an abundant source of energy biomass, or raw material for added value products but it is still largely unexploited. This residue may find several applications, such as in polymers/composites precursors, solid/liquid biofuels, biofertilizers, and so forth. The aim of the present paper was the pilot production of pellets by mixing SCG and other residual biomass feedstock. Coffee residues were mixed at different ratios (0, 10, 30, 50, 70, 90 wt%) together with: (i) forestry residues; (ii) sawmill residues; (iii) urban prunings; (iv) maize residues; (v) peach prunings; and (vi) miscanthus. Samples of each fuel mixture were analyzed at the Solid Fuels Laboratory of CPERI/CERTH (Chemical Process and Energy Resources Institute/Centre for Research and Technology Hellas) in Greece by applying established standards. The results of the analyses show that the mixing of biomass residues with coffee could result in competitive solid biofuels. More specifically, pellets with up to 10% coffee residues, mixed with sawmill residues, complied with the class A2 limits set by the international standard ISO 17225‐2 for wood pellets, and pellets with up to 30% coffee residues complied with the class B limits for wood pellets for commercial/residential applications. Urban prunings mixed with 10 wt% coffee residues are within the limits set for class B wood pellets.

One type of biomass that has promising potential for bio pellet production is spent coffee grounds (SCGs). However, previous studies have shown that SCGs in bio pellets cause a lot of smoke. Therefore, they need to be mixed with a material that has a higher calorific value to produce better quality pellets. One material that can be used is pine wood because it has a natural resin content that can increase the calorific value. The aim of this study was to examine the quality of bio pellets produced with SCGs and pine wood charcoal at different particle sizes. The charcoal was ground using either a hammer mill (HM) or a ball mill (BM). Pine wood charcoal was mixed with SCGs at ratios of SCGs to pine wood charcoal of 4:6 and 6:4 by weight, respectively, and the adhesive used a tapioca with a composition ratio 5% of the raw material. The bio pellets were produced using a manual pellet press. The quality of the bio pellets was assessed based on Indonesian National Standard (SNI) 8021-2014, and the physical observations include flame length, burning rate, and compressive strength. The average water content, ash content, and calorific value of the bio pellets were in accordance with SNI 8021-2014, but the density and ash content values were below the standard values. The BM variation of bio pellets had a higher compressive strength than the HM variation, and the 4:6 BM variation had the longest burning time compared with 4:6 HM.

Poly(3-hydroxybutyrate) (PHB) and coffee dregs (CDs) are both biodegradable materials. The latter are household wastes with no commercial value that are discarded in landfills mixed with other organic wastes. PHB has properties equivalent to polypropylene (PP), but its prohibitive cost restricts its field of application. The incorporation of this residue in a PHB matrix is a way to obtain materials with a high cost/benefit ratio. The aim of this work was to investigate the effect of adding oil-free coffee dregs (OFCDs) on the mechanical and morphological properties of PHB. Soxhlet extraction using ethanol as a solvent was used to obtain OFCDs. The PHB/OFCD composites were prepared in a twin-screw extruder. Standardized methods were used to evaluate the tensile and flexural properties. The test specimens were obtained by compression molding. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was applied to evaluate the morphology of the composites obtained. The data obtained showed that the incorporation of 15 wt.% of OFCD caused no significant differences in the tensile modulus, tensile strength and flexural modulus. The flexural strength decreased with the incorporation of OFCD in the PHB. However, the material obtained was interesting, since it was more attractive in terms of cost and environmental impact. SEM micrographs showed good dispersion of OFCD in PHB when the OFCD content was 5 wt.%. However, when higher levels of residues were incorporated in the PHB, the formation of agglomerates became evident. Poor interfacial adhesion between the filler and matrix was indicated by the cracks and voids revealed in the micrographs. The results obtained indicated that PHB/OFCD composites prepared with 15 wt.% of OFCD particles have potential to be used in the production of PHB materials that require high stiffness, adequate strength, and lower cost, such as sheets and thermoformed products for food, medical, personal care and laboratory applications
