Laparoscopic versus Open Appendectomy

Abstract: Introduction: Acute appendicitis is the most common surgical emergency with a lifetime incidence of 7%–8%. There are two operative modalities that are currently used for the management of this condition in the paediatric population. The objective of this cohort study was to review the outcome of the management of paediatric surgical patients presenting with acute appendicitis after either an open appendectomy (OA) or laparoscopic appendectomy (LA) was performed. Me… Show more

“…In pediatric patients, two operative modalities, namely open appendectomy and laparoscopic appendectomy, have been widely used for the management of appendicitis. Of the six studies [44][45][46][47][48][49] that compared the SSI rates between open appendectomy and laparoscopic appendectomy, four of them found laparoscopic appendectomy had a significantly lower risk of developing SSIs compared to open appendectomy 45,[47][48][49] . In contrast, two studies 44,46 found no statistically significant association between the operative techniques (open/laparoscopic appendectomy) and SSIs.…”

“…Several studies have compared laparoscopic appendectomy versus open appendectomy in the management of complicated appendicitis and the results showed that there was no difference with regards to the operative technique and complication rates. Hence both surgical techniques are effective and safe but laparoscopic appendectomy is associated with a shorter hospital stay [36][37][38][39]. Caution is recommended during the initial learning curve for laparoscopic appendectomy in complicated appendicitis, a high index of suspicion of development of complications is essential.…”
