Laparoscopic Repair of Vesicovaginal Fistula

Abstract: Purpose: Vesicovaginal fistula (VVF) is one of the most devastating surgical complications that can occur in women. The primary cause remains an abdominal hysterectomy. Approach to this condition can be transvaginal or transabdominal. Laparoscopic repair of VVF may be an alternative approach to this treating rare condition. We present seven cases of VVF treated with transperitoneal laparoscopic technique and our results. Methods: We retrospectively reviewed the charts of 7 women ranging from 37 to 74 years in a… Show more

“…Laparoscopic and robot-assisted approaches have been described by various authors in case reports and small series but mainly restricted to tertiary centers due to the need for cost-prohibitive equipment and advanced laparoscopy skills [27][28][29].…”

“…The newer laparoscopic and robot-assisted techniques may not confer any benefi t to the patient in terms of morbidity because most published small series show mean operative time of 170 to 280 minutes and mean hospital stay of 3 to 7 days [27][28][29]. From a practical standpoint, these techniques offer no advantage to clinicians in the community setting who may lack special advanced laparoscopy training and expensive equipment.…”
