Laparoscopic Repair of Diaphragmatic Morgagni Hernia

Abstract: A novel case of laparoscopic repair of a diaphragmatic hernia through the foramen of Morgagni in a 5-year-old boy is reported. The patient had a prompt and complete recovery, with no evidence of recurrence noted at 1 year after surgery. Laparoscopic repair is considered to be a suitable and safe procedure for the treatment of Morgagni hernia.

“…Included in this group are repairs of congenital diaphragmatic hernias (CDHs) originating from either the foramen of Bochdalek or foramen of Morgagni. A number of pediatric surgeons have reported their experiences with laparoscopic repairs of foramen of Morgagni hernias [1][2][3][4][5][6][7][8]. For the most part, these isolated case reports have been in asymptomatic children older than 2 years [1][2][3][4][5]8].…”

“…Most published papers recommend surgical repair under elective conditions following the establishment of a diagnosis regarding the rare, but possible, risk of strangulation and incarceration. [1][2][3][4][5][6][7] Confirmation of the defect by computed tomography (CT) is recommended following an incidental diagnosis by a chest roentgenogram. 1,4,6 Treatment is composed of the simple surgical closure of the retrosternal opening either conventionally by open abdominal or thoracic approaches, or more recently, by using minimal access surgery (MAS).…”

“…They are usually asymptomatic and discovered incidentally [2]. Standard surgical procedures for the repair of Morgagni hernia traditionally require a laparotomy or thoracotomy, but with the recent advances in minimal access surgery, repair can safely be performed laparoscopically.…”
