Laparoscopic Ovariohysterectomy in Nine Dogs

Abstract: Minimally invasive surgery has been found in humans to reduce pain, incidence of infections, and duration of hospitalization. Minimally invasive procedures are also being described in veterinary medicine. Laparoscopic ovariohysterectomy (OHE) was performed on nine, healthy, intact female dogs using a Harmonic scalpel. Creatine kinase values were determined both before and 12 hours following the laparoscopic OHE; the magnitude of the difference between preoperative and postoperative creatine kinase values did n… Show more

“…These events are of course not directly comparable, but should perhaps make clinicians question the value of isolated CK measurements. A study evaluating CK in dogs undergoing laparoscopic ovariohysterectomy supported this view, concluding that CK was not useful as a measure of surgical stress as the postoperative increases of CK in their patients differed widely, despite their undergoing a uniform procedure 7 . Other authors have further suggested that when utilising CK as a measure of trauma, isolated measurements of CK activity are of little use.…”

“…Abdominal wall lifting techniques rapidly developed, since gasless laparoscopy has been firstly applied in cholecystectomy by Nagai in 1991 (1,5,6,24,27). These techniques provided a good visualisation for surgical procedures.…”

“…For female cats and dogs, ventral midline, paramedian, flank, and laparoscopic approaches are acceptable and use of these approaches for ovariohysterectomy and ovariectomy in pediatric and adult patients has been described. 16,46,[197][198][199][200][201][202][203][204][205][206][207][208][209][210][211] For male cats, scrotal approaches are acceptable, and for male dogs, prescrotal and scrotal approaches are acceptable. Use of these approaches for castration has been described for pediatric and adult patients.…”

“…221 Ovariohysterectomy and ovariectomy-There are many acceptable variations of the surgical procedures that can be used to sterilize female cats and dogs. 16,46,[197][198][199][200][201][202][203][204][205][206][207][208][209]211,212,[222][223][224][225] The particular surgical procedure and its details, including the length and location of the surgical incision and ligation techniques, will vary depending on the program, the veterinarian's preferences, and the individual patient's needs. In all cases, complete removal of both ovaries is required.…”
