Laparoscopic management of ovarian dermoid cysts: a review of 47 cases

Abstract: BackgroundMature cystic teratomas, often referred to as dermoid cysts, are the most common germ cell tumors of the ovary. In the recent years, transvaginal sonographic diagnosis of ovarian dermoid cysts together with laparoscopic approach have greatly improved the treatment of this benign lesion. “…Ideally, they should have been operated without spillage; vigorous washing was done after tissue retrieval in all the cases. 11,12 Similar to our study, in a series by Shwaki et al, they had a spillage rate of 50% with no case of chemical peritonitis. 13 The operative time depends on the experience of the surgeon, size of the tumor and the adhesions present.…”

During the cysts extraction, minimal spillage occurred in 42,5% of cases and none developed chemical peritonitis [4]. Spillage of cyst content occurred in 66% of cases, no intra or postoperative complications occurred, and none case of chemical peritonitis was noted [5].…”

“…In cases of dermoid cyst, 6.4% pa ents had bilateral ovarian dermoid cysts, 62% had presented with pain abdomen, and 25% with abnormal vaginal bleeding, 2% with torsion and, 7 in 17%, dermoid cysts were diagnosed incidentally. Laparoscopy should be considered the method of choice for removal of benign ovarian cys c teratomas as it offers the advantage of fewer postopera ve adhesions, reduced pain, 9 shorter hospital stay and be er cosme c results.…”
