Laparoscopic Liver Resection: Lessons at the End of the Second Decade

Abstract: Laparoscopic liver surgery has evolved over the last two decades. Advancements in surgical technology, surgical technique, and postoperative care have aided in lifting barriers to laparoscopic liver resection (LLR). In this review, the authors highlight the modern indications, benefits, safety, and feasibility of laparoscopic liver resections. Moreover, they analyze various studies comparing laparoscopic major hepatectomies to open surgery. Morbidity and mortality rates are at an all-time low in this era of la… Show more

“…On the contrary, advances in laparoscopic techniques and instruments have rendered laparoscopic procedure more safe and feasible in surgical opertation. 8 , 9 Over last decades there has been an increasing trend toward a minimally invasive approach of liver resection with less blood loss, shorter hospital stay, and without compromised complication rate or oncological outcomes comparing with open surgery in younger patients populations. 10 12 …”

“…Furthermore, the long-term outcome of laparoscopic resection is comparable with open resection both in terms of overall survival and disease free survival 29 . Hand assisted laparoscopic liver resection may reduce the need for conversion to full open surgery and help to control haemorrhage 28 30 .…”
