“…In several large series (2 with Ͼ700 patients each) from Belgium [36], Italy [37], and Australia [35], mortality rates of 0% to 0.1% were reported. However, an Italian multicenter study of 1,265 patients reported a postoperative mortality of 0.55% (7 deaths, but only 2 reported occurring within 30 days of surgery) [38]. Major complications are uncommon, with band slippage (2.2% to 10%) [37][38][39], port complications (1% to 11%) [34,37], and band erosion (0.3% to 1.9%) [38 -40] the most frequently reported complications that may require reoperation [35][36][37][38].…”

“…We suggest that it could be explained by the length of follow-up and the type of routine studies done during follow-up in each study. It seems that the band erosion can be a clinically silent event in a sizeable proportion of cases [2,10], but that it may be detected early by a routine endoscopy. The studies that report on a high rate of intragastric band migration performed gastroscopy as an integral part of their follow-up.…”

“…Outside of the United States, laparoscopic gastric banding has been shown to be a very effective weight-loss procedure [1,2,4,6,15,30,31,37]. The technique has been modified during the past 8 years.…”
