Laparoscopic excision of a retroperitoneal mucinous cystic neoplasm: A case report

Abstract: Highlights Primary retroperitoneal mucinous cystic neoplasms are rare. Due to potential seeding intra-operatively, laparoscopic removal was avoided. Our case showed efficient and safe use of a laparoscopic approach. Surgeons must plan for every cyst to be malignant when planning for removal. With a laparoscopic approach, care is required when aspirating the cyst in vivo.

“…They have been rarely described in the mesentery [2]. The epidemiology of MCNs highlights a predominance in adult females [1,[3][4][5]. Histologically, MCNs are similar to ovarian mucinous neoplasms and are characterized by a mucinsecreting flat, columnar, or cuboidal epithelium associated with an underlying ovarian-like stroma [2,4].…”

“…The first one argues that PRMCs are believed to be originating from heterotopic ovarian tissue due to its sound resemblance to ovarian cystadenomas. The second hypothesis considers PRMCs to originate from an invagination of the mesothelium of the peritoneum that becomes experiences mucinous metaplasia and forms as a cyst 11 , 12 .…”

“…Estrogen receptor positivity in stromal cells of PRMCs has also been indicated. Second, these tumors arise from an invagination of peritoneal mesothelium that is entrapped and undergoes mucinous metaplasia and cyst formation [5] , [6] . Generally, cysts are asymptomatic and are found fortuitously after a routine checkup assessment.…”

“…This type is similar to the ovarian mucinous cystadenomas of low malignant potential. The third type is the mucinous cystadenocarcinoma that is an invasive tumor [5] , [6] .…”
