Laparoscopic common bile duct exploration to treat choledocholithiasis in situs inversus patients: A technical review

Abstract: Situs inversus (SI) is a rare congenital condition characterized by a mirror-image transposition of the major visceral organs. Since the 1990s, more than one hundred SI patients have been reported to have successfully undergone laparoscopic cholecystectomy. In these cases, the major problem is to overcome is the left-right condition for right-handed surgeons. Laparoscopic common bile duct exploration (LCBDE), an alternative to treat patients with bile duct stones, has shown equivalent efficacy and is less like… Show more

“…6 Although LC + LCBDE may be preferred for SI patients based on this evidence, conducting LCBDE in these cases is more challenging, even for skilled laparoscopic surgeons. 7 To our knowledge, this is the first report of bile duct stone removal using the transcystic technique with needle forceps in the French mirror technique.…”

“…While most case reports have utilized the "American mirror technique," the requirement for right-handed surgeons to cross their hands for dissection has been challenging. 2,7 This problem was overcome by adopting the "French mirror technique," which allows the surgeon to perform the surgery with both hands, similar to conventional LC, without the need to cross forceps.…”
