Lanthanides in Soils of Historical Mining Sites in Poland

Abstract: Lanthanides are a series of elements with atomic numbers ranging from 51 to 71 that comprise lanthanum and 14 elements of the 4f-block. They have similar chemical properties, and together with yttrium and scandium constitute the group of rare earth elements (REE). Their increasing use in modern technologies, including the high-tech industry, electronics, and medicine, has stimulated the growing interest of geochemists on their environmental behaviour and potential toxicity [1, 2]. Physiological functions of RE… Show more

“…Geological settings and mining history of the five sampling sites were described by Karczewska et al [50]. Generally, mineralization occurs either in serpentinised dolomitic marbles and calc-silicate skarn-type rocks (Złoty Stok) or as vein-type sulphide hydrothermal intrusions (other sites) formed in dislocation zones of various geological structures.…”

“…The changes of selected properties of the initial soils developed on the afforested dump of copper ore mining wastes were also studied by Wójcik and Kowalik (2006). Apart from the above-mentioned studies, also concentrations of lanthanides in soils of historical mining sites in Poland were studied (Karczewska et al, 2019).…”
