Lanthanide phosphine oxide complexes

Abstract: Phosphine oxide complexes of lanthanide metal have been studied to elucidate the fundamental aspects of their structural chemistry and to develop important technological applications mainly in the reprocessing of nuclear fuels and in photoluminescent devices but also in other fields such as gas sorption and homogeneous catalysis. The aim of this review is to give an overview of the range of complexes with phosphine oxides and trivalent lanthanide and yttrium ions, their structural features and applications.

“…As previously stated, the chemistry of lanthanoids with phosphine oxides is quite well studied and many complexes with different metal ion:phosphine oxide ratios were isolated (Platt, 2017 ). These previous studies show that the stoichiometry of the complexes seems to be dependent on the nature of the metal salt employed, and on the molar quantities of salt and phosphine oxide in the reaction mixture, but also on the cone angle of the phosphine (Tolman, 1977 ).…”

“…Accordingly, it seems that the coordination chemistry of lanthanoids with phosphine oxides is really interesting from the magnetic point of view. This coordination chemistry has been extensively studied, mainly by Platt ( 2017 ), but, in spite of this, the magnetic behavior of these compounds is still poorly investigated. Therefore, taking into account all the above considerations, we have decided to revise and extent the study of the coordination chemistry of Dy and Tb with phosphine and arsine oxides, and to investigate the magnetic behavior of the obtained compounds.…”

“…1 The study of phosphine oxides with f-elements has primarily focused on their use in extraction processes [2][3][4][5] and in (pseudo)halide/nitrate f-element starting materials. [6][7][8][9] The effect of two ligands trans to one another is most prototypically examined in the actinyls, AnO 2 n+ , where the trans-oxygens display unusually short bond distances and high bond strength, best described as bond order of three. 10 This effect, termed the inverse-trans-inuence (ITI) as a general concept has become the focus of several experimental and theoretical investigations and has evolved to be primarily applied to ligands trans to multiply bonded ligands.…”

“…Transition metal‐catalyzed C–P coupling to afford phosphine oxide derivatives has attracted a great deal of interest, because phosphine oxides are useful intermediates in chemical synthesis including the phosphine ligands used in transition metal catalysis and organocatalysis . Hence, plenty of catalytic systems based particularly on Pd, Cu,, and Ni have been reported for the C–P coupling reaction.…”
