The effect of TbCl 3 on the aggregation processes of the anionic surfactants sodium decyl sulfate (SDeS) and sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) has been investigated. Electrical conductivity data, combined with Tb(III) luminescence measurements suggest that the formation of micelles involving TbCl 3 and SDS occurs at concentrations below the critical micelle concentration (cmc) of the pure surfactants; the formation of these mixed aggregates was also monitored by light scattering, which indicates that the addition of TbCl 3 to surfactant concentration at values below the pure surfactant cmc results in a much greater light scattering than that found with pure sodium alkylsulfate surfactant micelles. This phenomenon is dependent upon the alkyl chain length of the surfactant. With Tb(III)/DS − , complexes are formed with a cation/anion binding ratio varying from 3 to 6, which depends upon the initial concentration of Tb(III). This suggests that the majority of the cation hydration water molecules can be exchanged by the anionic surfactant. When the carbon chain length decreases, interactions between surfactant and Tb(III) also decrease, alterations in conductivity and fluorescence data are not so significant and, consequently, no binding ratio can be detected even if existing. The surfactant micellization is dependent on the presence of electrolyte in solution with apparent cmc being lower than the corresponding cmc value of pure SDS.

The interaction of trivalent lanthanides with sodium dodecyl sulfate micelles (SDS) in aqueous solution has been studied by a variety of experimental techniques. Potentiometric measurements with a sodium selective electrode, steady-state fluorescence spectra of Ce(III), emission lifetime measurements of Ce(III), Tb(III), and Eu(III), and electronic paramagnetic resonance spectra (EPR) of Gd(III) all show that the lanthanide ions bind to the micellar surface. From analysis of the Tb(III) lifetime measurements in water and D 2 O solutions, it is found that the lanthanide ions lose one hydration water on binding to SDS. However, the EPR measurements suggest that the lanthanide ions still have considerable freedom of movement. Energy transfer between Ce(III) and Tb(III) has been used to obtain further information on multiple lanthanide ion binding. From steady-state fluorescence measurements in aqueous solution in the absence of SDS no energy transfer is observed, although there is quenching of Tb(III) emission by Ce(III), which is found to follow good SternVolmer kinetics. In the presence of SDS micelles, very different behavior is observed and energy transfer occurs from excited Ce(III) to Tb(III). This is only possible when the two ions are on the same micelle. The energy transfer phenomena is highly dependent on micelle concentration and has been analyzed theoretically via a Monte Carlo simulation. This shows that the lanthanide ions bind close to the micelle surface, and are consistent with the loss of a water molecule. Also, assuming a Dexter-type model in which the energy transfer intensity is proportional to the inverse of the square root of the average distance between cerium and the closest terbium it is possible to reproduce qualitatively the experimental cerium(III)-sensitized Tb(III) luminescence intensity data.

Single crystals of lanthanum butyrate monohydrate were obtained by reaction between lanthanum hydroxide and an aqueous butyric˚˚å cid solution. The crystal structure (triclinic P1, Z52, a59.940(2) A, b512.182(2) A, c514.652(2) A, a585.98(3)8, b575.62(3)8, g578.17(2)8) consists of layers parallel to (001). The alkyl chains are in an all-trans conformation parallel to (110). The layers are constructed by lanthanum chains, which are connected to one another by bridging bidentate carboxylates.
