The main goal of this study is to lay the foundation for the representation of written metaphors as Linked Open Data (LOD) on the Semantic Web (SW). To achieve this goal, this study proposed concepts and properties that allow metaphors from different domains to be linked. The use of the proposed formalism is illustrated through a case study of biblical data extracted from text, represented, populated, and queried to demonstrate the usage of the proposed ontological concepts. The proposed model reuses the FaBio bibliographic ontology to represent the bibliographic information of metaphoric data, and the OWL-Time ontology to represent the temporal aspects of events associated with metaphors. Examples from different domains were used to illustrate the implementation and population of concepts related to time instants and intervals. The notions of approximation and uncertainty in the description of the time of occurrence of events associated with the creation, publication, and translation of metaphors were also discussed. An important aspect of the proposed formalism is the representation of the qualities attributed to the vehicle and target concepts of conceptual metaphors. This enables the identification of symbolism and interpretation of concepts in different contexts and domains. The proposed formalism was tested against a number of queries and proved to satisfy the information requirements.

Extraction of Poetic and Non-Poetic Relations From of-Prepositions Using WordNet

The main goal of this paper is to extract the semantic relations underpinning the concepts of English prepositional of-constructions derived from poetic and non-poetic datasets, using Princeton WordNet. The problem is addressed by two different algorithms, which are evaluated for their ability to model the different types of resources from which the relations are derived, and for their ability to predict unseen relations. The first algorithm introduces the concept of subsumption hierarchy between relations in order to derive the most general relations associated to each type of data source and identify a set of relations specific to each dataset. The second algorithm investigates the use of a weighting scheme in order to establish the importance of each association extracted. Of particular importance are the notions of subsumption hierarchies between relations (expressed as synset pairs) and the Inverse Relation Frequency (IRF) measure, which is inspired by the Inverse Document Frequency measure used in Information Retrieval. The ontological prospects of using Princeton WordNet and the above algorithms for the creation of ontologies are also briefly discussed. Although the main interest of the proposed methods lies to the identification of conceptual relations particular to poetic resources, the methods followed can be applied and are evaluated on other domains too.

The Arabic ontology – an Arabic wordnet with ontologically clean content

We present a formal Arabic wordnet built on the basis of a carefully designed ontology hereby referred to as the Arabic Ontology. The ontology provides a formal representation of the concepts that the Arabic terms convey, and its content was built with ontological analysis in mind, and benchmarked to scientific advances and rigorous knowledge sources as much as this is possible, rather than to only speakers’ beliefs as lexicons typically are. A comprehensive evaluation was conducted thereby demonstrating that the current version of the top-levels of the ontology can top the majority of the Arabic meanings. The ontology consists currently of about 1,800 well-investigated concepts in addition to 16,000 concepts that are partially validated. The ontology is accessible and searchable through a lexicographic search engine (http://ontology.birzeit.edu) that also includes about 150 Arabic-multilingual lexicons, and which are being mapped and enriched using the ontology. The ontology is fully mapped with Princeton WordNet, Wikidata, and other resources.
