Language Production and Comprehension: The Effect of Pre-school Aged Siblings on Toddlers Language Development

Abstract:

Despite previous works showing that mothers, fathers, and siblings provide input to their toddler, the role of siblings on specific changes that they may cause, remains obscure. Since most work in this area has concentrated on the input provided by parents, this study extended prior work by comparing how specifically parents and sibling could influence different aspects of language development in toddlers up to age 24 months. 20 children (1; 8) were videotaped interacting with their family members.  Tw… Show more

“…This finding suggests that the presence of older siblings may create unique, additional experiences for younger children to apply and practice cognitive skills. By examining EF skills, this finding extends prior correlational evidence that a greater number of siblings was associated with better language skills and academic test performance (Malmeer & Assadi, 2013;Nicoletti & Rabe, 2019). Further, we build on prior research by showing that the positive association between the number of older siblings and EF skills did not depend on levels of home stimulation for 4-year-old boys.…”

“…In Kenya, having an older sister was associated with improvements in younger siblings’ vocabulary and fine motor skills (Jakiela et al, 2020). Similarly, in Iran, toddlers with a preschool-aged sibling demonstrated better comprehension of words and phrases used by family members, measured through observations and coding of child speech samples, compared to those without a sibling (Malmeer & Assadi, 2013). In the present sample in rural Pakistan, the number of older siblings was positively associated with 4-year-olds’ EFs, controlling for family wealth, maternal education, home stimulation, and physical growth (Obradović et al, 2019).…”

“…Unknowingly siblings could have an influence on the language development of their younger brothers and sister. Malmeer andAssadi (2013:1226) reported that not only the mother and father or perhaps the grandparents but also young siblings could have an influence on a young child's language development. Their study involved young children and their older siblings, but all the children were still preschoolers.…”
