Even though Saudi EFL students devote multiple years to improving their English-speaking proficiency, they struggle to achieve fluency. The present study, however, focuses on investigating the effectiveness of using Duolingo in EFL classrooms to enhance the participants’ speaking proficiency. The participants who underwent this study were 28 male Saudi students studying in secondary school, namely at Sharia Institute. They were divided into control and experimental groups. Data was collected via post-test to conduct a valid comparison between the two groups. The 14 students in the experimental group had been using Duolingo for a period of four consecutive months while the participants in the control group have never used Duolingo. To make a valid comparison of the mean score between the two groups, an independent samples t-test was used in this experiment. After analysing the results, it has been concluded that the integration of Duolingo in the learning process has a fundamental positive impact on enhancing participants’ speaking proficiency as well as improving their overall language skills. Additionally, the participants’ positive attitude towards Duolingo was an intrinsic factor that helped alleviate their anxiety when speaking.

This review sets out to summarize studies that consist of research-based evidence indicating the effect of social media on language teaching and learning .We probed Information and Communication Technology (ICT), social media, different social networks, and language teaching and learning in academic databases such as ERIC, Springer, Taylor and Francis, Sciencedirect, ProQuest, Elsevier, Scopus, Wiley, and Google Scholar. From 350 studies related to the effects of ICT and social networks on language teaching and learning in the literature, 9o Iranian and international core papers were reviewed. This meticulous review showed that SNSs positively influence the process of the teaching and learning foreign language.

Gendered constructions of Filipina teachers in Japan's Skype English conversation industry

Drawing on data from a larger project that includes blog entries and interview findings, this paper investigates the ways in which Filipina teachers working in Japan's Skype English conversation (eikaiwa) industry are constructed as intimate and romanticized entities through Japanese male learners' discursive practices. The paper argues that these highly gendered constructions are never unrelated to the male learners' desires to display their masculinity. The paper also points out that these desires stem from the long-established sex-mediated link between Japanese men and Filipinas based on their economic disparities. The paper concludes with a suggestion that the popularity of Philippines-based Skype eikaiwa cannot be explained by the development of telecommunication tools or neoliberalism alone; rather, it should be understood as a trend that has emerged from the complicated intersection of all pre-existent and current economic, sociopolitical, cultural-political, and technological components.
