Cílem tohoto článku je představit čtenáři problematiku romské identity a sebeidentifikace v romské etnické komunitě, a dále představit nesoulad mezi sebeidentifikací (romské pojetí “já”, také nazývané jako “romipen”) a zřejmou obecně předpokládanou identitou romských osob. Mnoho výzkumníků je toho názoru a statistiky dokládají, že dochází k pomalému vytrácení sebeidentifikace s romskou etnickou komunitou. Dále bude stručně představena důležitost jazyka jako jednoho z hlavních faktorů přispívajících k utváření identity společně se sníženou ochotou romských rodičů učit své děti romský jazyk. Tato skutečnost je dokládána výroky romských rodičů a pracovníků, kteří pracují s Romy. Nakonec budou vzneseny pro metodologii plynoucí důsledky nesouladu mezi sebeidentifikací a zjevně předpokládanou identitou.

The Preference for English in Digital Media among Indonesian Millennials

The use of English among Indonesian millennials has been more widespread especially because of exposure to English has been so massive to secondary school in urban areas. There has been a concern that the increasing use of English might diminish their Indonesian language use and cultural identity. This study aims to investigate the roles of English on satellite TV programs and social media posts for Indonesian millennials, their language preference, and the consequences of language preference on their national identity. A concurrent embedded mixed methods design collecting quantitative and qualitative data was carried out through short essays and closed-questionnaires. Both questions of essay writing and closed-questionnaires were sent to students of private high schools in two big cities (Jakarta and Surabaya), aged 18 to 20 years old online. The questionnaire items were in multiple-choice and the short paragraph essay explained the importance of TV programs and social media posts for learning English. After being scrutinized, 989 respondents’ essay responses were analysed. The findings showed that TV programs and social media posts were claimed to have important roles of English learning resources. Although they practiced English through social media, they felt that they still kept themselves as Indonesians when using English on social media

Language and cultural identity are things that can be summarized in terms of language identity. The construct of second language identity has strong relation with study abroad. Second language identity tends to appears in continuous classical conditioning through study abroad. However, no further investigation about this issue has been researched in Indonesian international student context. This study aims to explore how is the second language identity constructed through the interactions during study abroad. Through narrative interviews, this study would explore more about how second language identity of two international students constructed in their study abroad countries. The result of this study is second language identity construction is more powerful based on self-desire of participants and who the interlocutors are. Further, by knowing how the second language identity is constructed when international students are in native and non-native Englishspeaking countries, this study would give an empirical contribution about how English language learning patterns depend on the environment. Thus, the English teacher or language expert later could adapt English learning patterns through the construction of other people's language identity.
