Language deficits in schizophrenia and autism as related oscillatory connectomopathies: An evolutionary account

Abstract: Schizophrenia (SZ) and autism spectrum disorders (ASD) are characterised by marked language deficits, but it is not clear how these arise from gene mutations associated with the disorders. Our goal is to narrow the gap between SZ and ASD and, ultimately, give support to the view that they represent abnormal (but related) ontogenetic itineraries for the human faculty of language. We will focus on the distinctive oscillatory profiles of the SZ and ASD brains, in turn using these insights to refine our understand… Show more

“…On the other hand, syntactic, semantic and phonological computations have been decomposed to a sufficiently generic level, permitting a range of brain-language linking hypotheses (e.g. Murphy 2016;2018a;Murphy & Benítez-Burraco 2017;Grimaldi 2018). This internalist focus on the mental faculty of language (Berwick 2017) is in stark contrast to the externalist focus on the output of language, such as speech and communication.…”

“…Their opposed natures can be tracked from brain structure and developmental paths and functions, including cognitive abilities [Crespi and Badcock, 2008]. We have previously described how SZ and ASD patients process language differently and exhibit distinctive and specific oscillatory profiles when computing language [Murphy and Benítez-Burraco, 2016b]. Similarly to SZ, language deficits in ASD can be linked to many changes that occurred during our speciation.…”

“…Here, they suggest that the language deficits in schizophrenia seem to be rooted in the evolutionary processes that brought about modern language. This evolutionary account and the common oscillatory profiles of language deficits in schizophrenia and ASD are further described in a recent article (Murphy and Benítez-Burraco, 2016).…”
