Langmuir Nanoarchitectonics from Basic to Frontier

Abstract: Methodology to combine nanotechnology and these organization processes has been proposed as a novel concept of nanoarchitectonics, which can fabricate functional materials with nanolevel units. As an instant nanoarchitectonics approach, confining systems within a two-dimensional plane to drastically reduce translational motion freedom can be regarded as one of the rational approaches. Supramolecular chemistry and nanofabrication and their related functions at the air-water interface with the concept of nanoarc… Show more

“…Because the features of the nanoarchitectonics concept are general and applicable to most materials systems, this concept can be applied to many research targets. In fact, the nanoarchitectonics concept has already been applied in various fields, including materials production [12,13], structural fabrication [14,15], sensing [16,17], catalysis [18], energy [19], environmental [20], devices [21,22], and bio-related [23,24] applications.…”

“…[5] The nanoarchitectonics concept was originally proposed by Masakazu Aono. [6] It combines nanotechnology with fabrication essences from various research fields such as supramolecular chemistry, materials science, and biological chemistry. In the nanoarchitectonics procedures, functional materials and systems can be architected with various actions and processes including atomic/molecular manipulation, organic synthesis, self-assembly/self-organization and structural regulation upon application of external physical stimuli ( Figure 1).…”

“…The introduced platforms are roughly classified into (i) membrane platforms and (ii) nanostructured platforms, while nanoarchitectonic strategies are purposefully devised across these platform concepts. In the perspective part, we propose a novel concept for describing interfacial (or Langmuir) nanoarchitectonics [28] as an innovative methodology to achieve energy-efficient control over molecular systems, including molecular machines.…”
