Abstract: Abstract:Natural floodplains are spatially heterogeneous and dynamic ecosystems but at the same time, a highly endangered landscape feature due to climate change and human impacts such as water storage, flood control and hydropower production. “…Even under some floodplain regulation (e.g., levees), surface water heterogeneity was reflected strongly in the degree of hydrological complexity, and this complexity was evident in macroinvertebrate distributions and abundances. Regulation of floodplains and floodplain surface waters homogenizes aquatic habitats (Doering 2012a) and likely are principal causes for losses in floodplain biodiversity. These results suggest that floodplain restoration should attempt to reconnect floodplain surface waters and increase the hydrological complexity associated with natural floodplains.…”
