Abstract:Restoration of the degraded ecosystem is a global priority for achieving sustainable development. Although increasing ecosystem service is an important goal of ecological restoration, it is rarely used to inform mine reclamation. This study proposed a reclamation strategy that incorporated land suitability analysis and ecosystem service evaluation for a mining site in Liaoning Province, China. We assessed the land suitability for three reclamation alternatives and identified suitable land uses for each location by comparing their suitability levels. For areas that were suitable for multiple land uses with the same suitability level, the future land uses cannot be identified by land suitability analysis alone, and we employed ecosystem services evaluation to determine the optimal reclamation strategy. The results showed that forest could be restored throughout the entire mining site, agricultural land were most suitable in the western and southern parts, and developed land were in northern parts that were closer to roads and city centers. Our study showed that a large mining site can be reclaimed to different land uses and provided a practical framework for integrating ecosystem services into mine reclamation.

Abstract-The visual impact of open-pit mineral workings along sloping terrain generates conspicuous scars extending to the surrounding landscape. Such irreversible developments permanently alter the original landform. This is more pronounced in areas of high landscape value. The aim of this paper is to put forward the case for a contextual design of a restoration scheme grounded in the geophysical and cultural elements making up the landscape character and thus complimenting it. This is demonstrated through a case study of Gozo, a picturesque sister island of Malta, known as the island of Calypso after the legendary Homeric nymph, where such quarries have significant visual impact. Based on site contours derived from historical survey sheets and making reference to vernacular cultural features within the surroundings, a restoration and rehabilitation of a disused quarry based on a geocultural approach to landscape design was developed. Prior rehabilitated to sustainable agrarian parcels of land, the site contours were re-introduced together with field boundaries to pre-mineral operational status. This approach is a rational solution derived from rural vernacular architecture and ensures a landscape design solution which reinstates the scenic quality and the aesthetic experience of the area.

A B S TR A C TThe article deals with the recent positive changes in the industrial landscape of the Karviná region in a broader context. The Karviná region has been the most important part of the coal-bearing Ostrava-Karviná District. Since the industrial revolution, the position of the primary mining area has brought a dynamic economic development and a great concentration of population into the fast-growing conurbation cities, particularly between 1950s and 1980s. However, the dominant coal mining and processing has had a negative impact on the environment, the character and utilization of the landscape. Many environmental, socioeconomic and other problems did not become fully evident until the social changes at the turn of 1980s and 1990s. At present, a great attention is being paid to the reclamation of the affected landscape. As a result, the region is starting to change its unflattering image of an industrial and problematic area devastated by coal extraction for the better after many years. The various forms of land reclamation, modification of water bodies, construction of new sports and recreational facilities and so on are bringing a gradual improvement of the environment in the region, creating a new cultivated landscape that can be used, among other things, for various forms of tourism and relaxation.
