Landscape phytosociology concepts and definitions applied to serial and catenal vegetation mapping

Abstract: The main concepts and definitions related to dynamic-catenal phytosociology are presented and discussed, in order to share common definitions within the French national program CarHAB dedicated to serial and catenal vegetation typology and mapping. Symphytosociology is based on serial approach and on the vegetation series concept, while Geosymphytosociology is based on catenal approach and on the geoseries concept.

“…The definitions relating to the dynamics of vegetation, series, curtaseries, permaseries, climatophilous, edaphophilous, etc. are those corresponding to the vegetation series concept given in Bioret et al (2019). However, we believe it useful to broaden the set of definitions given by these authors: we can indeed distinguish between "climatoxerophilous" series, marked by a deficit of precipitation during the growing season (Mediterranean climate, etc.…”

“…that was characterised by the biggest known specimens, which were destroyed due to an involuntary fire [103] caused by cigarette butts thrown on the roadside, and by rare and haggard specimens of Cercis siliquastrum L. and Cotinus coggygria Scop. The presence of the last species adds a biogeographical interest to the local vegetation because it belongs to the Italian peninsula southern distribution limit for this species [104]. A remarkable specimen of Cotinus coggygria and another one of Buxus sempervirens growing in the surroundings were recently eliminated, as they were ignored during some works [103].…”

“…L'analyse phytosociologique est prolongée par une étude des relations dynamiques entre végétations, suivant l'approche dynamico-caténale (Lazare 2009 ; Bioret et al 2019). Selon cette approche, les individus de syntaxons étudiés par la démarche phytosociologique détaillée ci-dessus qui se trouvent au sein d'une surface écologiquement homogène (ou tessella) sont liés par des relations dynamiques de successions et appartiennent par conséquent à une même série.…”
