Landscape futures: decision-making in uncertain times, a literature review

Abstract: This paper considers how rapid environmental change, generated through both inhuman natural forces and human-induced impacts, affects landscape futures and decision-making processes. To do this, we start by defining 'futures', and, more specifically, the different kinds of futures at stake in changing landscapes. We discuss how rapid environmental change not only puts immediate pressure on identifying alternative futures for landscapes, but also threatens to unsettle patterns of attachment to the landscape. We … Show more

“…Collaboration around technical sensing work can provide a mechanism for better communication and understanding of different groups' needs and perspectives, which are important to the success of efforts to promote integrated sustainable land management. Initiatives such as the "Towards Integrated Cultural/Natural Heritage Decision Making" project have highlighted the need for new strategies to respond and engage proactively, rather than reactively, to planning for the future of the landscape and call for a rethinking of the aims of integrated land management [145,146].…”

Rapid environmental change is increasingly affecting landscape futures, and this ‘not only puts immediate pressure on identifying alternative futures for landscapes but also threatens to unsettle patterns of attachment to the landscape’ (Bartolini and DeSilvey, 2021: 8). Recent explorations of landscape and the Anthropocene complement this landscape research on the politics of environmental change (e.g.…”

“…Innovation to improve landscape service quantification: Policy goals on biodiversity conservation, food security, net-zero emissions, and sustainable land and ecosystem service management are dominant themes that drive landscape decisions [1,2,16,58,59]. The rationale is that a sustainable and multifunctional landscape must be achieved within the context of actualising these policy goals [11,16,52,60].…”

“…This assertion is supported by the findings in [15] on sustainable and multifunctional landscapes. Nevertheless, we face a formidable challenge when identifying landscape decision principles at a regional or national scale that could be used to provide a scientific rationale and support the specific types of drivers of decisions per landscape archetype [8,22,58,69].…”
