Culture as an abstraction of a dynamic human experience, tends to develop in line with development of the supporting communities. Babad Banyumas as a literary work of traditional history reflects the culture which tends to convey a transformative message, and many of which loaded with social life values of the community at the time which became the underlying guidance and characters of the Banyumas society. This study aims to explore the culture and local values of Banyumas community's social life reflected from the text of Babad Banyumas. This is a qualitative study which employs content analysis to Babad Banyumas text as the data analysis. The data was collected through observation and interviews with experts in history. Data analysis uses qualitative data analysis using display data, data reduction and data verification to find common themes. The results of the study found that there are manifested cultural values and concepts in Babad Banyumas among others the culture of showing gratitude ‘terima kasih’, cablaka, egalitarian, asceticism (tapa brata), freedom (free soul), and politeness, which are also effective in strengthening and instilling the local culture and social norms values appreciated and observed by Banyumas society.Keywords: cultural values, Babad Banyumas, social studies

The cultural landscape is regarded as being of the most complex designs which involves interactions between man, nature, cultural values and the associated built environment. Issues relating to the degradation of the cultural landscape are often caused by rapid urbanisation and industrialisation. The traditional Malay Landscape exists through harmoniously balanced interactions between man, nature and culture together with the traditional house, and contains unique and interesting features that have to be preserved as one of the most important cultural heritage sites. However, the preservation of heritage in Malaysia tends to focus more on architectural buildings rather than adopting a holistic approach that includes the surrounding environment of where the building is located. The absence of such approach has contributed towards the loss of the traditional Malay Landscape. This study highlights the changes and threats in the preservation of the traditional Malay Landscape by focusing on the preservation of a traditional house compound. The research employs a qualitative approach which involves site visits, interviews, and document analysis concerning the research topic. The old Malay villages located in Tumpat, Kelantan and Alor Gajah, Melaka have been selected as case studies. The findings reveal that the changes and threats include four underlying aspects; Unsuitable and inappropriate uses, Ownership Problems, Inadequate fund and consultation and Current development trends. The study concludes that the traditional Malay Landscape is facing numerous changes and threats in terms of its physical characteristics, environmental aspects and cultural values. In addition, the study reveals that traditional Malay landscape is not seen here as an integrating, holistic concept.

Abstract. This study introduces the concept of the Kota Bharu Islamic city in the eyes of tourists, with focus on recent trends affecting Malay cultural landscape and urban planning issues in Kelantan. The aims of this study are to introduce the concept of the Kota Bharu Islamic City as the new cultural tourism product in Malaysia as well as to enhance the reputation of the concept at the highest peak and Malay community development in Malaysia by using multiple methods including literature review, site observation and document analysis. The Kelantan Malay heritage should be highlighted as a main consideration in the future planning to avoid further damage or loss of valuable heritage. Finally, a regional vernacular tradition should be set as the focal point in making of the Islamic City of Kota Bharu without mimicking from other Islamic countries and subsequently the concept of the Kota Bharu Islamic City to be promoted as a new cultural tourism product in Malaysia will be successful.
