In recent decades, the role of heritage railways has gradually shifted from transportation, economy, and trade to tourism, culture, and ecology. The heritage railway landscape is experiencing multiple changes along with a value ambiguity problem. There is a need to comprehensively recognize this landscape in order to promote the transformations and monitor the changes. Inspired by Landscape Character Assessment (LCA), this paper adopts a two-scaled identification framework of landscape character types and areas of the Yunnan–Vietnam Railway (Yunnan section) by integrating holistic and parametric methods. At the regional scale, the landscape character was divided by five natural variables: landform, vegetation, hydrology, soil, and geology. At the corridor scale, the landscape character was classified by five natural and cultural variables: altitude, slope, aspect, land use, and heritage density. At these two scales, k-prototype cluster analysis and multiresolution segmentation (MRS) tool were used to identify landscape character types and areas. The results showed that there were 11 different landscape character types and 80 landscape character areas at the regional scale, and 12 different landscape character types and 58 landscape character areas at the corridor scale. Furthermore, the composition, area, and distribution of these landscape character types and areas were described. The results of this study can form a database for planning, management, and evaluation of the railway.

Sandy islands suffer multiple external disturbances and thus experience drastic temporal ecological changes, and the two parts, that is, the states of essential components (Part 1) and the resilience under multiple disturbances (Part 2), are both indispensable to the sandy island ecosystem health. In this study, a model for the sandy island ecosystem health was established by integrating the two parts. In Part 1, the states were measured following the framework of vegetation, soil, and landscape, and a total of 12 factors in the three components were adopted. In Part 2, three typical disturbances, namely, geomorphological change, soil salinization, and human influence, were identified, and the resilience across different time intervals was measured by clarifying the intrinsic correlations between the components and disturbances. A sandy island ecosystem health index (SIEHI) was proposed based on the two parts, and Chongming Island was selected as the study area to demonstrate the model. The results indicated that the SIEHI continuously increased from 1988 to 2017, denoting the good effects of “Eco-Island construction” on Chongming Island. In different components and factors, the vegetation and soil components contributed more than the landscape component to the sandy island ecosystem health, and vegetation quality and soil carbon/nitrogen were the factors that made the most contributions. In different disturbances, the human influence played a major role in driving the spatiotemporal variations of the sandy island ecosystem health. Farming and building construction contributed the most and accounted for 37.12% and 35.59% of the total human influence, respectively, while traffic development exerted the highest influence per area. Then, influence coefficients of different human activities on the sandy island were determined, and measures for different functional zones were proposed for balancing the protection and development and achieving the sandy island ecosystem-based management.

Scientific evaluation and dynamic monitoring of regional ecological environment have important reference value for the establishment and implementation of regional ecological environment protection and restoration measures. Spatial principle component analysis was used to assess the present situation and the temporal and spatial variation characteristics of ecological environment of Kalajun-Kurdening natural heritage site by calculating the remote sensing ecological index (RSEI) and analyzing the landscape pattern. Three results are presented: (1) During 2006-2019, the mean values of the greenness indicator showed an increasing trend, with an increase of 10.58%, which proves that the vegetation coverage in Kalajun-Kurdening shows an increasing trend year by year. The other three indicators of dryness, moisture, and heat decreased by 134.51%, 14.66%, and 3.45% respectively. The change of greenness and dryness has a stronger positive effect on the ecological environment quality, while the negative effect of heat on the ecological environment quality is reduced. (2) During the 14 years, the regional RSEI of 1104.23 km 2 remained unchanged, accounting for 54.32% of the total area. The area with a descending RSEI is 547.23 km 2 , accounting for 26.92% of the total area, 84.52% of which had a drop of one level. The area with the rising RSEI is 381.31 km 2 , accounting for 18.75% of the total area, 90.56% of which has a rising by one level. (3) Landscape indexes of the different grade of RSEI in Kalajun-Kurdening showed that the landscape fragmentation was small, the structural complexity was reduced, and the landscape patches were regularized, artificial, and centralized; different types of RSEI had obvious agglomeration; and the cohesion between patches was relatively good. Overall, the ecological environment quality of the Kalajun-Kurdening world natural heritage site showed an upward trend from 2006 to 2019 without large-scale deterioration of, maintaining in good condition.
