Landmines in the Golan Heights: a patient's perspective

Abstract: Fifteen years after the Ottawa Mine Ban Treaty, landmines continue to negatively impact global public health. Recent estimates attribute 11–12 daily casualties to landmines and explosive remnants of war. The majority of these casualties are civilians. Children are disproportionately affected by landmine injuries. In this report, we examine the case and recovery of a child severely injured in a 1982 Golan Heights landmine accident, illustrating the danger landmines pose to civilians and their long-term health i… Show more

“…Thus, it might be used in a variety of fields, which have been categorized into three sections: Bio-sensing: microbiomes are continually reacting to environment changes, which means they have the ability to detect and respond to them [ 38 ]. This method allows tuning of the sensing elements towards certain species of bacteria (shown in Figure A6 ), which can be used to mark their presence in the environment or receive better signal to noire ratios (SNR) [ 39 , 40 , 41 , 42 , 43 , 44 ]. Bio production/Bio degradation: the microbiome’s functional effect on the ecosystem is assisted through biomolecule production and destruction.…”

“…Kreniske et al describe a case of a child wounded by a landmine to advocate for, “community landmine awareness and safety education, as well as comprehensive mine removal,” to improve health and economic viability in endemic regions ( 86 ). The case of delayed diagnosis of tuberculosis is discussed in a case report of an indigenous man in Guatemala.…”

“…Among those beliefs most relevant to the case presently described are an emphasis on a satisfied acceptance of fate preordained by God, and a foundational belief in mutual aid manifest as “protection and aid to brethren in faith.”4 Previous reports on the Golan Heights Druze communities have emphasised the role of strong community ties based on the principle of mutual aid and religious faith in a predetermined destiny as important for patients and families coping with challenging medical circumstances 5…”
