LANDFIRE Remap Prototype Mapping Effort: Developing a New Framework for Mapping Vegetation Classification, Change, and Structure

Abstract: LANDFIRE (LF) National (2001) was the original product suite of the LANDFIRE program, which included Existing Vegetation Cover (EVC), Height (EVH), and Type (EVT). Subsequent refinements after feedback from data users resulted in updated products, referred to as LF 2001, that now served as LANDFIRE's baseline datasets and are the basis for all subsequent LANDFIRE updates. These updates account for disturbances and vegetation transition changes that may not represent current vegetation conditions. Therefore, in… Show more

“…The local Ochoco model predicted almost no change in canopy height in moderate-severity fire classes (mean 1.2% decrease) compared to global model estimates of a 20% mean decrease (Figure 11). This could add additional value and supplement ongoing improvement of LANDFIRE data products [93].…”

“…The ecological models used to create the LANDFIRE Remap existing vegetation map are based on Landsat Enhanced Thematic Mapper Plus (ETM+) and Operational Land Imager (OLI) imagery, a suite of ancillary datasets (e.g., topography, climate, and soils) and the LANDFIRE Reference Database [47,48]. Seasonal image mosaics centered on 2016 were created using the USGS Earth Resources Observation and Science Center high performance computing systems and a best-pixel image compositing process [49] used to produce cloudfree image mosaics for each vegetation production unit area.…”

“…The draft map for each vegetation production unit area was reviewed by several ecologists familiar with the area vegetation and when necessary post-processing was done to refine classes either by applying decision rules to relabel pixels or a new model was run if the concept of the type needed to be refined based on new information or additional plot data. For a full description of the LANDFIRE Remap methodology see Picotte et al [47].…”

“…The goals of the Remap and BpS Model Library Review phase were to update LAND-FIRE geospatial products using new imagery (Picotte et al 2019) and to update and improve the BpS model library with new science and feedback gleaned via our user support work. We engaged experts and conducted the review primarily through an online process supplemented with a few workshops for larger groups and many one-on-one meetings.…”
