The petroleum industry’s development has been supported by the demand for petroleum and its by-products. During extraction and transportation, however, oil will leak into the soil, destroying the structure and quality of the soil and even harming the health of plants and humans. Scientists are researching and developing remediation techniques to repair and re-control the afflicted environment due to the health risks and social implications of petroleum hydrocarbon contamination. Remediation of soil contamination produced by petroleum hydrocarbons, on the other hand, is a difficult and time-consuming job. Microbial remediation is a focus for soil remediation because of its convenience of use, lack of secondary contamination, and low cost. This review lists the types and capacities of microorganisms that have been investigated to degrade petroleum hydrocarbons. However, investigations have revealed that a single microbial remediation faces difficulties, such as inconsistent remediation effects and substantial environmental consequences. It is necessary to understand the composition and source of pollutants, the metabolic genes and pathways of microbial degradation of petroleum pollutants, and the internal and external aspects that influence remediation in order to select the optimal remediation treatment strategy. This review compares the degradation abilities of microbial–physical, chemical, and other combination remediation methods, and highlights the degradation capabilities and processes of the greatest microbe-biochar, microbe–nutrition, and microbe–plant technologies. This helps in evaluating and forecasting the chemical behavior of contaminants with both short- and long-term consequences. Although there are integrated remediation strategies for the removal of petroleum hydrocarbons, practical remediation remains difficult. The sources and quantities of petroleum pollutants, as well as their impacts on soil, plants, and humans, are discussed in this article. Following that, the focus shifted to the microbiological technique of degrading petroleum pollutants and the mechanism of the combined microbial method. Finally, the limitations of existing integrated microbiological techniques are highlighted.

The primary energy source for many companies and daily living is petroleum. Priority pollutants include hydrocarbons, which are a major component of petroleum pollution. Oil spills and other accidental releases of petroleum-derived chemical wastes into the environment that poses the contamination of soil, sediments, and marine environments, frequently have detrimental effects on human health. It is reported that petroleum hydrocarbons alter the genetic sequences that leads to mutation and more importantly it exhibits carcinogenic effects also. They also have detrimental socioeconomic effects in the host communities that produce the oil. In comparison to the conventional physico-chemical procedures for the restoration and reclamation of polluted areas, bioremediation strategies have been recognised as an economical and environmentally benign alternative. Depending on the contaminants in the polluted soil, different organisms are used with various bioremediation techniques. Microbial bioremediation is the technique of using microorganisms or microbial processes to remove or degrade pollutants from soil. Extracellular enzymes are produced by microbes to break down complex hydrocarbons into smaller, more accessible molecules. These compounds are subsequently transferred into microbial cells to provide energy and growth. Microbes frequently build biofilms on soil particles, resulting in localised microenvironments that improve degradation efficiency and shield cells from harmful circumstances. This paper contrasts the degradative properties of remediation techniques depending on microbial action.

Egyptian Journal of Botany http://ejbo.journals.ekb.eg/ Review 43 E NVIRONMENTAL pollution is exacerbated by the rise in petroleum hydrocarbons due to exploration, production, transportation, and industrialization. This requires immediate remediation. Although crude oil removal using conventional techniques is efficient for cleaning up aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems, it is costly and requires specialized staff and equipment. Despite their negative environmental consequences, chemical compounds such as dispersants, cleansers, emulsifiers, biosurfactants, and soil oxidizers are highly utilized. Phytoremediation and bioremediation have emerged as cost-effective and environmentally friendly technologies. This paper aims to review the impacts of crude oil pollution and the phytoremediation of polluted ecosystems. We have reviewed various phytoremediation/bioremediation mechanisms and environmental factors. Additionally, we have discussed the degradation of crude petroleum, factors affecting petroleum hydrocarbon bioremediation, and the environmental consequences, such as DNA and epigenetic mutations. We have also compared the economics of phytoremediation and restoration of polluted sites with conventional technology. Plants can remediate the environment through phytodegradation, phytostabilization, phytovolatilization, evapotranspiration, and phytoaccumulation. The microbial activities in the plant rhizosphere enhance the degradation and accumulation of the pollutants and modulate their bioavailability, thereby remediating the polluted areas and stabilizing the soil fertility.
