Landau-Pomeranchuk-Migdal effect in thermal field theory

Abstract: In recent studies, the production rate of photons or lepton pairs by a quark gluon plasma has been found to be enhanced due to collinear singularities. This enhancement pattern is very dependent on rather strict collinearity conditions between the photon and the quark momenta. It was estimated by neglecting the collisional width of quasi-particles. In this paper, we study the modifications of this collinear enhancement when we take into account the possibility for the quarks to have a finite mean free path. As… Show more

“…Note, however, that collinear divergences identified in higher orders [200,204] raise doubts about the consistency of the original calculations in [202,197,198]. In spite of significant recent work and progress [200,203,204,205,206], the complete calculation of the production rates for photons and dileptons in the quark-gluon plasma remains an open problem.…”

“…This powerful resummation technique can be directly applied to relevant problems in cosmology [39,40] or in hot abelian gauge theories [41,42], as well as in the many-body theory of ultracold condensates [43]. Yet, for non-abelian gauge fields the more complete 3PI resummation becomes necessary [44,45], and for a setting with topological defects an inhomogeneous treatment is inevitable [46]. Being both extensions expensive, we will have to fall back in these cases to the classical approximation and use 2PI to benchmark it where their domains of validity overlap.…”

“…These rates have been evaluated at 1-loop 1 in [3,4,5], at 2-loop in [6,7,8,9], and the Landau-Pomeranchuk-Migdal [10,11,12] corrections have been resummed in [13,14,15,16,17,18,19]. Up-to-date reviews of the situation regarding photon and dilepton production in equilibrium can be found in [20,21,22,23].…”
