Land Use Mix in Functional Urban Areas of Selected Central European Countries from 2006 to 2012

Abstract: The land use mix (LUM) is among the critical issues in spatial planning because it can determine the occurrence and structure of various land use and cover types (LUC) and prevent any adverse patterns. The paper focuses on the LUM in functional urban areas (FUAs) in Czechia, Slovakia, Poland, and Hungary. The research employed Urban Atlas (UA) data on LUC in 2006 and 2012 to characterise LUM in the FUAs. The research follows the division of the FUA into the urban area (urban core, UC) and its functional surrou… Show more

“…It entails the replacement of the existing building with denser developments in UCs, while in CZs, vegetated areas are built up. Today, this phenomenon is caused by changes in social behaviour embodied in lifestyle changes and a new consumption structure rather than a growing population (EEA, 2006;Kudas, Wnęk and Tátošová, 2022). Additionally climbing land prices in cities promote projects in peri-urban areas, driving the growth of new transport networks.…”

“…The The strong link between human activity and the landscape, particularly anthropogenic landscape, is evident in urban (Chase & Chase, 2016) and suburban areas (Kudas et al, 2022;R ożycka-Czas et al, 2021). The development and settlement pressure in the suburban zone is significant and has many drivers (see Table 1).…”

“…The area of the city of Rzeszów and its commuting zones (CZ) is subject to changes in land cover and land use, research [19] shows that between 2006 and 2012 there was an increase in the area of class 1 -artificial surface at the expense of a decrease in area of class 2agricultural areas, semi-natural areas, and wetlands in functional urban areas of Rzeszów. In 2006, a high similarity between the Land Use Mix (LUM) of the CZ of Rzeszów and the balance of LUM in the CZ of Warsaw (the capital of Poland) was noted [20]. In the period 2006-2012, slightly smaller changes in the spatial entropy of the LUM system were determined in the area of the Reszów city than in its CZ [20], which may indicate greater changes in CZ than in the Rzeszów city and its historic center.…”
