Land-use/land cover changes and their driving forces around wetlands in Shangri-La County, Yunnan Province, China

Abstract: The Shangri-La County of the Yunnan Province, SW China, is an economically and ecologically important area. This is especially true for Jiantang that is famous for the Napahai, Bitahai and Shudu Lake wetlands. However, continuing development has threatened the wetland ecosystems and the associated biodiversity in these areas. To better document such changes in land use and their effect on the ecosystem, land use was mapped using a time series of satellite images acquired in 1974, 1993, 2000 and 2012. The resul… Show more

“…Importantly, agricultural development resulted in wetland loss in the study area. In agreement with this finding, a study in China shows that improper agricultural practices and expansions depleted wetland resources (Wu et al ., ). Similarly, another study in western Ethiopia shows that recurrent food shortages have forced many local communities to extend their agricultural activities into wetlands (Dixon et al ., ).…”

“…These decisions have inevitable consequences on the employment, electricity and energy consumption, volume of exports and gross value added. In addition, studies about the driving forces that control LUCC and possible implications on society, economy, environment and territory are important to the implementation of new land management guidelines and develop more effective strategies for ecosystems protection [92].…”
